PhoneSweep 4.4 Quick Start

Installing PhoneSweep
First, install any multi-port serial I/O cards and their associated drivers. Attach the hardware license management device (dongle) to
the parallel or USB port. (It must be attached throughout the installation process). If you have a USB dongle, install the USB drivers
as well.
To install PhoneSweep: On NT and Windows 2000 systems, log in as an administrator. Place the PhoneSweep CD in your CD drive.
If autoplay is enabled, the installer will automatically run, otherwise, run the file setup.exe from the top level directory on the CD. You
will be presented with a catalog listing of items to install. Single click on the PhoneSweep icon to install PhoneSweep.
PhoneSweep, including all manuals and programs, will install by default into C:\Program Files\Sandstorm\PhoneSweep. Manuals
are also available via the user interface and your computer’s Start->Programs->PhoneSweep menu.

Starting PhoneSweep
Attach the dongle to your computer. Start PhoneSweep with the Start->Programs->PhoneSweep menu. After reading the
PhoneSweep License Agreement screen, select Accept to continue the startup process. You will be presented with the main
PhoneSweep window, which is finished loading when you see the word “Idle” in the lower left corner of the window.

Your First Test Sweep

Sandstorm strongly recommends that after you install PhoneSweep, you run a test sweep on a small set of phone numbers to familiarize
yourself with the way that PhoneSweep interacts with your company’s phone system.
1. Prepare modems. Ensure that all of your modems are plugged in to their analog (or ISDN) lines, turned on, and available.
2. Create a new profile. In the PhoneSweep window, select Setup->Profiles. On the right side of this dialog window, select New
then type in a profile name.
3. Turn on modem COM ports. In the PhoneSweep window, select Setup->Modems. Check the boxes for all modems that will be
in use for this scan. You can determine each modem’s assigned COM port via your computer’s Device Manager.
4. Set Effort level. Select Setup->Effort. For your first scan, select the CONNECT level.
5. Enter phone numbers. Select the Phone Numbers tab. On the right side of this window, select Add. Enter approximately 10
phone numbers for this first, short scan. Try to pick numbers that will display various types of results: voice, fax, and a known dial in
number to a computer. After you enter each number in the From field, click on the + button to add the number to your PhoneSweep
profile. When you are finished adding numbers, close the Add Phone Numbers window.
6. Save your profile. Click on the Save icon, located at the top of the PhoneSweep window, to save all profile information.
7. Start the scan. Click on the Start icon at the top of the PhoneSweep window.
8. Watch your progress. Select the Status tab while the scan is running. Here you will see which modems are in use and which
numbers are currently being called, as well as an estimated time to scan completion. You can also see which results have already been
found by checking the Phone Numbers tab, the Results tab, or the History tab.
9. Scan is complete. The Scan is complete when the progress bar across the top of the screen is at 100% and the word “Idle” is in
the lower left corner of the window. Produce a report by selecting the Report icon at the top of the PhoneSweep window.
10. Exiting PhoneSweep. You can exit PhoneSweep by closing the PhoneSweep window or by selecting File->Exit. Exiting
PhoneSweep will close down all PhoneSweep processes, and terminate any sweep in progress.
For more information, see the PhoneSweep manuals and Release Notes (readme.txt) files included on the CD.
