Woodwinds: Stepping and Skipping

Objective

1. Understand how to find their concert pitch

2. Confidently know fingerings for Concert Bb “Do Re Mi”

3. Follow solfege hand signs

4. Confidently play “Stepping and Skipping”

Procedures

1. Have students find Concert Bb on their instrument

a. Ask one student from each section to tell what their starting pitch is in Concert Bb

2. Have students find the first three intervals of a Concert Bb scale on their instruments

a. Ask one student from each section to tell what these notes are and their fingerings

3. Solfege “Stepping and Skipping”

a. Teacher will sing mm. 1-4 on solfege using hand signs

b. Students will ghost play mm. 1-4 on their instruments while singing solfege with

teacher

c. Teacher will sing mm. 5-8 on solfege using hand signs

d. Students will ghost play mm. 5-8 on solfege using hand signs with the teacher
e. Students will play mm. 1-8 as the teacher leads them with solfege hand signs

4. Read “Stepping and Skipping”

a. Have students play “Stepping and Skipping” now with sheet music as teacher

directs

Assessment

1. While directing I will assess each student’s fingering

2. Listen for articulation and breath support, demonstrate if needed

Standards

El. 11 The Student will demonstrate proper instrumental techniques, including:

1. Finger/slide placement, using finger/slide patterns and fingerings/positions

2. Production of tones that are clear, free of tension, and sustained

3. Wind student- proper breathing techniques and embouchure; contrasting articulations

(tonguing, slurring, staccato, accent)
