The Effectivenes of Using Reward and Punishment in Asessment to Motivate

Student in SMK PGRI 4 Kota Kediri Grade First

A. Background

In this era, Indonesia has implemented the 2013 Curriculum learning system, where
students must be more active and critical in thinking. However, students are only focused and
active critical thinking on subjects they are interested in and mastered, and for other subjects that
are less interested, students will underestimate these subjects, especially at the Vocational High
School.

At the Vocational High School many students underestimate Foreign Language lessons,
because they consider it not from their department. Here I took the object in SMK 4 PGRI Kota
Kediri Department of TKR (Teknik Kendaraan Ringan) class 10. The problem faced was that
they assumed that foreign languages were not needed for a mechanic's workshop, even though
foreign languages especially English were very important to learn for prospective mechanics
because the main language on the machine or machine manual is in English. Students
underestimate English because they think nothing can be achieved from English lessons, so they
are more concerned with learning about their majors.

I as the author of this paper, use the Reward and Punishment method to teach English
when giving assessments. Reward and punishment is as one of the educational tools that is useful
to intensify students' efforts to improve or enhance the achievements that have been or will be
achieved. Rewards are prizes, service recipients, educational tools given to students who have
achieved good performance. (M. Sastra Pradja, Kamus Istilah Pendidikan dan Umum(Surabaya:
Usaha Nasional, 1978),169.). With Reward and Punishment, they no longer think about the
achievement of learning English, but they learn English to get Reward and don't want to get
Punishment. Because the reward is as a tool to educate students so that students can feel happy
because their deeds or work is rewarded. (M. Ngalim Purwanto,Ilmu Pendidikan Teoretis dan
Praktis(Bandung: Remaja Rosdakarya,2007), 182.).
Saya memberikan Reward pada siswa yang memenuhi tugas yang saya berikan dan
ketika mereka berhasil, saya akan memberikan nilai tambahan. Reward to achieve many
achievement can be given as material or non material. It can positively motivate the
pupils.(Sumanto, Wasty, 1955, Psikologi Pendidikan: Landasan Kerja Pemimpin
Pendidikan, Jakarta: PT. Rineka Cipta Ce. P. 186).
(Durkheim, Emile, 1990, Pendidikan
Moral, terj. Lukas Ginting, Jakarta: Penerbit Erlangga. P.116). The punishment is given by
teacher with the following objectives 1. punishment is done to create the discipline of the
students so that students learn well; 2. to protect students from immoral act; 3. to scare the
offender so that they leave his actions which break the rule. When the teachers give the
punishment to pupils, they have to know the psychological condition of the pupils so that no
traumatic or mental disorders in the future after the punishment was given. (Ahmadi, Abu, 2001,
Ilmu Pendidikan. Jakarta: PT. Rineka Cipta., p.15). Dengan begitu banyak siswa akan berusaha
untuk mendapat Reward agar terhindar dari Punishment. Reward have the purpose to make
children more eager to improve and enhance their achievement. (Sayy, H. M. Arifin, 1996, Ilmu
Pendidikan Islam: Suatu Tinjauan Kritis dan Praktis Berdasarkan Interdisipliner, Jakarta: PT.
Bumi Aksara, Cetakan II. P.217). The basic principle in applying the punishment that
punishment is the last and should be limited and not hurt the pupils. The main objective of
this approach is to warn students of the mistakes that he did. (Arief, Armai, 2002, Pengantar
Ilmu dan Metodologi Pendidikan Islam, Jakarta: Ciputat Press. P.). Sehingga Reward akan
memotivasi mereka untuk belajar lebih giat. Dalam arti harfiah, reward berarti membuat
seseorang bersemangat, mau, dan angan-angan (Dehkhoda A., 1994. Dehkhoda Dictionay.
1stEdition of the new volume, Tehran University Publications.).

Sistem Reward and Punishment adalah Guru memberi assessment terhadap hasil kinerja siswa,
kemudian menerapkan system reward and punishment. Reward dan punishment memiliki tujuan
untuk memotivasi belajar siswa. (Wiyani, Novan Ardy, 2012, Manajemen Pendidikan Karakter:
Konsep dan Implementasinya di Sekolah, Yogyakarta: PT. Pustaka Insan Madani. P.43).
