ABSTRACT

REYES, JERWIN S. Northwestern University. March 2018. ASSESSMENT ON

WRITING SKILLS OF GRADE 12 SAN MARCELINO NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS: BASIS FOR ESP TRAINING-MATRIX.
Major Adviser: Professor Jurlita U. Basuel

The main aim of this study was to assess the writing skills of Grade 12 students of

San Marcelino National High School and to provide an English for Specific Purpose (ESP)

training-matrix based on the assessed writing needs. It was conducted at San Marcelino

National High School located in Dingras, Ilocos Norte.

The research and design (R and D) was used in this study. There were fifteen (15)

Grade 12 students as samples selected randomly. To gather the needed data, the survey

questionnaire was formulated which looked into the writing skills of the respondents

through self-assessment, their writing difficulties, the aspects of writing they want to learn,

and the modality students prefer to learn.

The results indicated that the least mastered skills in English writing were the

logical organization of ideas, supporting main points, and observing grammar and

mechanics. It was also found out that students had struggled on looking for sources and

references. The students preferred to learn writing letters, writing reports, writing

resolutions, and writing research paper. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that

students want to learn the indicated aspects of writing through lecture method. These
v

findings were used to construct the ESP training-matrix necessary to address the writing

skills needed by students.
