To what extent are we persuaded by the quantity of evident rather than the quality of evidence?

Persuading can be a hard task to operate. What truly supports a statement to be fair, right or

reasonable enough for people to be convinced? The quality of evidence shows the depth of detail

that provides reliable information. The quantity of evidence provides good amount of evidence,

which withdraws considerable support and reasoned arguments. Evidence uses areas of knowledge

and ways of knowing such as natural sciences, human sciences, reason, faith, and memory. The

usage of both quantity and quality of evidence is valuable to countless jobs we have in the world

today such as lawyers, investors, scientists, athletes and even farmers. But how much are we

persuaded by the quantity of evidence rather than the quality?

What is evidence? According to the decoding theory or knowledge in page 14, evidence is defined

as information that is interpreted to support a particular argument. Justification relies on evidence.

When an issue or a case has to be justified, evidence need to be provided to determine what is

right or wrong. Lawyers make decisions on who is guilty by evaluating the evidence provided. Would

it matter if the quantity of evidence provided is great, but the quality of evidence is flimsy? If there

was a murder case and the murderer suggests that she didn’t kill anyone, providing great amount

of anecdotal information while the person going against the murderer does not have too much

evidence, but shows the actual footage of the murder, the murderer would be considered guilty.

However in case of NBA franchises, the general manager of teams look at the statistics of players,
the evidence that this player is worth the money. The frequent amount of evidence provided to the

managers will convince them to acquire a certain player. IB also requires lots of IAs to get evidence

of student’s understandings and knowledge about their subjects.

Evidence deals with human sciences, reason, and faith. Evidence gives a certain reasoning to a

causation which gives us faith that a certain knowledge is true or false. Evidence creates correlation

between a person’s thoughts and faiths which creates arguments. Premise is all founded by quality

and quantity of evidence with all sorts of reasoning. As humans, evidence is such a big part of why

we know what we know and how should we trust what we know. In what cases is quantity of

evidence more needed than the quality of evidence?

Both types of evidences are critical and invaluable. It gives us a sense of direction and purpose

towards a claim or a point. In conclusion, there are times where quality of evidence is desperately

needed and where quantity of evidence is definitely needed. Depending on the person’s situation,

jobs and skills they need to use, the extent of persuading by a certain type of evidence differs.
