Chapter One
The Problem and its Scope

Introduction

Rationale of the study

As students grow, there will come to a point where they have to choose a career for

the sake of their future to provide not only for themselves but also for their families. When

students choose their careers, students have things to consider like, what they want, what

they are comfortable with, knowing the learning style that works best with is also a must to

consider in order to give us an easier time handling the career we chose.

The study talks about how different learning styles can affect the students’

career choices. This study also aims to see which learning style works best for each student

and how it can correlate to their career choices for the future.

Theoretical Background
VAK learning styles uses the three main sensory receivers: Visual,

Auditory, and Kinesthetic (movement) to determine the dominant learning style of

each individual. It is sometimes known as VAK (Visual, Auditory, and

Kinesthetic). It is based on modalities by which human expression can take place

and is composed of a combination of perception and memory.

In “Learning Style and Academic Achievement of Secondary School

Students” by Rajshree S. Vaishnav, he explains how every child each has his/her

own way of processing information in their brains, some may learn by oral

repetition, others through practical work, therefore stating that individuals thus

differ in the way they learn. He also explains that learning styles can be

described as a set of factors, behaviours, and attitudes that facilitate learning for

an individual in a given situation. Lastly he states that students learn differently

from each other. (Vaishnav, 2013)

Choosing a career choice that fits your personality is very important step

towards having a successful job. Holland theory is the most researched study on

career choices. The Holland theory has six personality types; realistic, artistic,

social, enterprising, and conventional. People with the same personality types

create a work environment that fits their personality. There are six basic work

environments which are realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and

conventional. People with the same working environment as their personality

type are likely to be successful and satisfied. (Holland, 2015)

Another study conducted by the Socony-Vacuum Oil company reveals that

students retain: “10% of what they read, 26% of what they hear, 30% what they

see, 50% of what they see and hear, 70% of what they say, and 90% of what

they say and do something.” (Felder-Silverman,1998:667)

Kolb’s learning style & its comparison to the VAK style of learning

presents a way of structuring a session or a whole course using a learning cycle.

The different stages of the cycle are associated with distinct learning styles.

Individuals differ in their preferred learning styles, and recognizing this is the first

stage in raising students' awareness of the alternative approaches possible.

Review of Related literature

The first evaluation is to find out if students learn better by hearing,

seeing, or moving information as a part of processing it. Every person’s learning

style in either or a combination of auditory, visual, or kinesthetic in terms of the

way he or she learns best. The study on Preferred Learning Styles of Students

Taking the English Paper in SMK Tengku Intan Zaharah talks about which

learning style works best for the students, the variables were Malaysian students.

In addition, this study investigated whether their teachers are aware of the

learners' language learning needs. his study was carried out among 60 selected

form 4 students and 48 form 5 students selected using cluster random sampling.

(Shaidi, 2012)

Another study entitled Learning Styles of Undergraduate Students and Its

Influence on the Preference of Lecture Delivery Method in a Large Enrollment

Undergraduate Gross Anatomy Course investigates the unique nature of

anatomy courses by examining the preferred learning styles of undergraduate

anatomy students, as well as their lecture delivery method of choice throughout

the course. (Quinn, 2015)

The role of learning style in the teaching/learning process this study is an

analysis of learning style types for a variety of students at different grade levels.

The purpose of this study was to increase faculty awareness and understanding
of the role of learning styles in the teaching/learning process. (2006, Csapo)

The Problem

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of our study is to see the correlation of VAK Learning

Styles and the student’s career choice. Specifically, this research aims to

answer the following questions:

1) How is each VAK learning style correlated towards a student’s career choice?

2) What are the common career choices preferred by students according to each
learning style?

A) Visual

B) Auditory

C) Kinesthetic

3) Why or why not is there a correlation to each learning style?

Significance of the Study

The significance of the study is that it not only benefits the students in

ways that could help them academically and for their future careers but it also

benefits the teachers because it gives the teachers a specific guideline on the
best ways each student can learn. It also benefits the parents of the students

because they will know how to help their children in their academics.

Methodology

This study used both a qualitative and quantitative approach, what makes this study

qualitative is the data we gathered from similar studies and what makes this

study quantitative is the data gathered with Southcrest Junior and Senior High

students as the variable of the study.

Research Data:

The units of analysis that the researchers used in this study was the

numerical data gathering. We will conduct this study in Paref Southcrest and

have 146 students from grades 7-12 as the respondents of the study. The researchers

will then see from there how VAK correlates to the career choice of the students

Research Instrument:

The researchers used 10 questions from a VAK learning style questionnaire and 10

questions from a career choice questionnaire.

Research Procedure:

The researchers will be giving out questionnaires that comprises of questions talking

about career choices and their preferred learning style. The study will be conducted in Paref

Southcrest with 146 students from Grades 7 to 12 as its respondents.

Hypothesis

Alternative Hypothesis:

The researchers’ alternative hypothesis that there is a correlation between learning

styles and the student’s career choice.

Null Hypothesis:

The researchers’ null hypothesis is that there is no correlation between learning styles and the

student’s career choice
