iPhone guide
Everything you need to know to navigate and use your phone like a pro

ow that you have finally got your hands on
your new iPhone, you’ll no doubt be keen
to master it. In truth, it couldn’t be easier. The
operating system (currently iOS 9) is intuitive and
simple to use, and all of the key apps come pre-
installed, visible on your Home screen. Before you
get to experience these though you will need to go
through an initial setup process when firing up your
device for the first time.
This takes the form of several steps that explain
the features that need to be set up and guide you
through the process of activating them. The first
step is creating an Apple ID (or signing in if you
already have one). This is linked to all aspects of
your iPhone, from buying apps and items from the
iTunes Store to utilising Apple’s excellent iCloud
service – all that is required is a valid email address
and a secure password.
A lot of the services and features that are set
up during this process are optional and can be
tweaked later if preferred. For this the Settings app
is your best friend; all of the different facets of your
iPhone are presented in a simple list, so just tap on
a category and begin exploring the many options
associated with it.

Once you are set up, take time to explore the
many core apps that come pre-installed on your
device, such as Safari (for web browsing), Mail (for
checking your emails), Calendar (your personal
organiser) and News (for up-to-the-minute reports).
Before too long you’ll be chomping at the bit to
download new apps and games from the App
Store. An array of options are available, some of
which require payment, while others are totally
free – such as Facebook and Twitter. Both of these
services are integrated in iOS, so ou will be able to
update your status or tweet much more easily.
Many of these features are the product of years of
development, and the forthcoming iOS 10 update
promises a further boost to your user experience.

Safari
Safari is your iPhone’s default web browsing app
and it comes packed with features to make web
trawling easier. The URL field at the top of the app
doubles up as a search field (just type in keywords
to perform searches) and the list icon to the left of
the field initiates Reader mode, which presents web
pages in a stripped-down, easier-to-read format.
The icons at the bottom of the interface allow you
to view your open tabs and share web content
via social media or into your Notes. The book icon
provides access to your bookmarks, items added
to your Reading List for offline reading and links
that have been shared on Twitter. Using the tabs
icon you can also view and close open tabs, open a
private tab and scroll down to see web pages open

Mail App Store

For all of your emailing needs, the Mail app is your iPhone’s default email
app and is feature-rich for all of your email management needs. When
launching the Mail app for the first time you will need to go through an
initial set-up process – but this involves little more than entering a valid
email address and password. Once done, you can start sending emails
almost instantly by tapping on the pen and paper icon in the lower-right
corner of the interface. Simply enter the recipient(s), add a subject and then
enter your body text. If you wish to send media attachments then you can
do this by tapping the share icon while in other apps (such as Photos) and
then choosing the email option. All of your emails can be organised into
neat little folders to make viewing and managing them easier and you can
also mark people as VIPs so that their mails go into a special priority inbox.
While in your mailbox, swipe left on an email to see options to Flag, Archive
and more.
The App Store is your first port of call for purchasing and downloading new
apps. When you launch the app for the first time you will be dumped on
the Featured page, which flags up the newest and most exciting apps as
well as providing options to redeem iTunes vouchers, send apps as gifts
to other people and sign in or out of your Apple ID. To start exploring in
more detail, there are icons at the bottom of the interface for Top Charts,
Explore, Search and Updates. Top Charts lets you view the current best
sellers. Tapping on ‘Categories’ in the top-left corner also lets you view apps
by category, such as Games, Music and Entertainment. The Explore option
is a relatively new feature that lets you see which apps are popular in your
current area and Search lets you enter keywords to find specific apps. The
Updates section lists all possible updates for the apps that you own (that
you can download for free) and you can also view apps you have purchased
in the past and re-download them to your current device.

to create your own personal news channel by
highlighting the key sources that you wish to
include based on your interests. You’ll then get
one handy digest of all of the latest headlines

iLife refers to a collection of apps designed to help you embrace life and

Numbers and Keynote, which focus on documents, spreadsheets and
presentations. In Pages you can create professional-looking documents,
posters and leaflets, whereas Numbers lets you apply all kinds of formulas
to your charts to make your figures tally up. Everything you create can
be presented through Keynote, or you can use this app to construct eye-
catching presentations. All of these apps are free to download from the
App Store and everything is synced between devices via iCloud.

Just got an iPhone? We guide you through the process of setting
up your device and registering it to your Apple ID
With trembling hands and a giddy
sensation in your stomach, you unpack
your brand new iPhone from its box
and are ready to activate it and start using it to
enhance your life. The entire setup can be carried
out independently from your computer, which
makes it a quick and easy process.
All you have to do is connect your new device to
a power source and then press the Power button,
which is situated on the top of the right-hand edge
of your iPhone. It is on the top-right of the device
if you have an older generation of iPhone. This will
bring up a generic iPhone lock screen with a slider
at the bottom. Tap and hold on the slider with your
index finger and swipe it to the right to unlock the
device and the next series of screens will guide you
through the setup process.
In this tutorial we will take you through each
stage of the process and explain what each screen
is asking you to do, whether it is setting up your
Apple ID, if you don’t already have one from making
purchases on iTunes, or connection to Wi-Fi.
