1. A major pharmaceutical firm is establishing its production plants across 11 different cities
in Asia, and it needs to incorporate refrigeration systems for refrigerating medicines at a
temperature range of -30 to -15 C and also providing cooling to the habitable rooms at a
temperature range of 5 C to 10 C. Due to logistical reasons, the type of refrigerant used at
each location is different as well (details in Appendix A).

Design an actual vapor compression system with two stage compression and two
evaporators including intercooling and flash gas removal.

2. Assuming that the pharma firm is located in locations where exhaust gases of cement plants
are being wasted away, design a vapor absorption system (with heat exchanger) for
refrigerating during the months of March-August for only the habitable rooms using the
exhaust gas temperatures.

Appendix B lists the minimum requirements for each design. For any queries, you can contact
Engr. Ahsan Afzaal Malik for further clarifications until 18/12/2019.

Minimum Requirements

1. Classification and design of cycle.

2. T-s and p-h diagrams for all cycles.
3. Schematic diagram of cycles with state labeling and component names.
4. Comment on the working fluid used and its advantages/disadvantages.
5. For refrigerants that do not have a lower temperature range of -30 to -15 C on the p-h chart,
find out a different refrigerant and make use of that instead.
6. Comment on the case-specific differences between Vapor Compression System & Vapor
Absorption System.
7. For extra credit, design a vapor compression system with only one evaporator and compare
it to the vapor absorption system. Comment on which one should be utilized and why.
8. Write down references in APA format.
9. The entire report should be printed on white A4 sheets and then spiral-bound.
10. Use Excel to perform all calculations.
11. Due date is 23/12/2019 (1:00 PM) and viva will be held on 24/12/2019.
