CAPACITY CHECK FOR BEAM MB 250

(FOR TRAILER LOADING BED EXTENSION)

Introduction:

The purpose of the document is to check and verify the capacity of the Beam used for the “Trailer Loading Bed
Extension”. Beam section of MB 250 has been utilised for the extension of trailer platform.

Beam Details:

Length of the Beam, L : 2.6 m

Load Factors:

Dead Load : 1.2

Live Load : 1.4 (table 2, BS 5950‐1:2000)

Load on Beam

Live Load, L.L : 100.0 KN

Steel Properties:

Type of Steel grade : S 275

Yield Stress py : 275 N/mm2 (table 9, BS 5950‐1:2000)

Young's Modulus E : 205000 N/mm2

Section Properties:

Type of Beam : MB 250

Mass, m : 37.3 Kg/m

Depth/Height, D : 250 mm

Width, B : 125 mm

Web thickness, t : 6.9 mm

Flange thickness, T : 12.5 mm

Section Modulus, Zx : 410 cm3

Section Modulus, Zy : 53.5 cm3

Moment of Inertia, Ixx : 5130 cm4

Moment of Inertia, Iyy : 335 cm4

Section Classification

Limiting Factor, ε : (275/py) 0.5

ε : 1

Flange Classification

Flange : B/2T (table 11, BS 5950‐1:2000)

: 5

Flange is Class 1 Plastic (< 9 ε)

Web Classification

Web : d/t (table 11, BS 5950‐1:2000)

: 36

Web is Class 1 Plastic (< 80 ε)

Check for Shear Buckling

If d/t < (70 ε), check for shear buckling is not required

d/t : 36

70 ε : 70

d/t < 70 ε (table 11, BS 5950‐1:2000)

No Need to Check for Shear Buckling

Factored Load

Factored Load : 1.4 D.L + 1.6 L.L

Dead Load, D.L : 1 KN

Live Load, L.L : 100 KN

Factored Load : 161.4 KN

Reactions

Reaction at A, Ra : 80.70 KN

Reaction at B, Rb : 80.70 KN

Check for Shear Capacity

Vertical Shear Force, F : 80.7 KN

Shear Capacity Pv : 0.6 x py xAv (cl 4.2.3, BS 5950‐1:2000)

Where, Av : tD

Av : 1725 mm2

Shear Capacity, Pv : 284.625 KN (> 80.70 KN)

Shear Capacity OK!

Check for Moment Capacity

Vertical Shear Moment, M : wL2/8

: 52.5 KN‐m

Bending Capacity, Mc : py * Sx (cl 4.2.5.2, BS 5950‐1:2000)

Sx : 410.4 cm3

Mc : 112.85 KN‐m

Mc > M

Moment Capacity OK!

Deflection under Imposed Load

Deflection, δmax : 5wL4/384EI

δmax : 0.35 mm

Allowable Deflection

For Total Loads, δa : L/200 (table 8, BS 5950‐1:2000)

: 13 mm (> 0.35 mm)

δa > δmax

Deflection OK!

Conclusion:

1. From the above Calculation, beam is safe under the factored imposed load of 161.4 KN (unfactored load
of 100 KN).
2. The above calculation is based on BS5950 Part 1: Code of practice for design ‐ Rolled and Welded
Section.

Design Max Allowable Status

Shear, (KN) 80.7 284.625 Pass
Moment, (KN-m) 52.5 112.85 Pass
Deflection, δ (mm) 0.35 13 Pass

The factors considered in this calculation are highly estimated and the values are conservative
