THE OTHER SIDE OF IMMIGRATION

Between 1970 and 2008 the number of Mexican immigrants in the US rose
from 760,000 to 12,7 million.
People from the countryside migrate the most, because they don’t have
opportunities and they want to give a better life to their children.
The rural economy
Before ,the Mexicans used to grow corn ,strawberries and beans but now it’s all
uncultivated. Now, people from the countryside say that it is not worth it
anymore because the money they are gaining from it is not enough toc over
the investment.
The politics
People are afraid to invest .The government is offering lots of programs to help
people grow but the thing is that they are not informed about it. Also they say
that if you don’t know the right people ,if you are not friend or relative with the
powerful people you will never have access to these programms.
Augustin-farmer migrant- „Yo could say that the Mexican government is among
the most corrupt that there are.”
Francisco- „Every year when the election comes, you have the illusion that this
time things are going to change…”
Mexicans in the US sent home at least $25 billion in 2008.
They are working in order to improve their lives but most of all the life of the
children. Also the money that migrants send back stimulates the local
economy.Working in the US is the best option for them because they don’t
have other options and the family needs food ,the bills have to be payed and so
on. Their way to the US is not easy at all, some of them are paying a lot to get
there and this way can also be very dangerous.
For the Mexican kids it’s not easy to grow up without a father and there are
cases where the kids choose the wrong way in life because there is no one
there to tell them what is right and what is wrong.
Mexico can’t be saved by one person, if they all would work together
beginning from the government ,for a better country, there wouldn’t be so
many immigrants.
