SUNDAY ¢ TV MARIA * 8:30AM » LIVE DAILY TV MASS ONLINE + Perea eee Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (A) — White 7:00PM 00AM ST PAULS MEDIA seein) December 29,2019 € Refi ugee Reece: have recently captivated the world’s attention. These are people fleeing wars and climate disasters that have made their original homes unsafe for living. Refugees leave their hometowns or homelands not because they want it but because circumstances force them to leave. Refugees bring with them barely anything: the few lucky ones could afford to bring with them belongings that don’t have to fit in their pockets, but the rest have only their clothes with them and scrimp their personal portable space with the last of their money and jewels. Jesus became a refugee only a few days after he was born. His parents were forced to flee to Egypt for his sake. Herod wanted no king to rival him, and any child— prophesied or not—who was suspected to usurp Herod’s hard-earned kingship must be killed. The flight to Egypt by Jesus, Mary, and Joseph foreshadows the story of many refugees fleeing tyrants. God's first experience after his birth was to be a refugee. He did this, knowing that 10% of the world’s population are people on the move. The refugees are the worst cases of this human tendency. To be a refugee is to suffer hunger, thirst, discrimination, and even rejection (by deportation) from host countries that do not want to spend for the newcomers’ food and shelter. But this is not a purely negative experience. To be a refugee is also to experience the helplessness that makes them put all their trust in God, confident that there are—or at least will be— people welcoming enough. People on the move could be right in your door and the streets near your homes. The typhoon Yolanda brought many refugees to Manila, wanting to forget the horrible experience and begin their lives anew. Some people are on the move in search for food and shelter, having no place to go except the streets, having no knowledge of other work except to forage on the garbage for something to sell. The beggars are refugees with no place or work to go to. Pope Francis has simplified mission as the way by which God reveals his love. Mission is not really about participating in conferences, proclaiming the Gospel through the social media, and those other stuff that make us believe we are causing changes in others’ lives. If we are unable to respond to people that knock on our homes and cars, the beggars whose eyes plead for help, the hungry with shrunken stomachs, then we are still not able to understand why God became a refugee. The Holy Family’s flight to Egypt is not really about him, but his identification with all the poor people walking in the streets and asking for help. If we close our doors and shut our eyes, we are not yet missionaries, missing the chance for an encounter that reveals his suffering presence among these people. Fr. Teotimo Melliza, SSP = A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians BROTHERS and sisters: Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put ‘on love, that is, the bons perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged. — The word of the Lord. All —Thanks be to God. Alleluia (Col 3:15a, 16a] (Stand) All — Alleluia, alleluia. Let the peace of Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel (Mt P — A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew All — Glory to you, 0 Lord. WHEN THE MAGI had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until | tell you. Herod is going to search fur the child to destroy him.” Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed from Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, Out of Egypt I called my son. When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee. He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, He shall be called a Nazorean. — The Gospel of the Lord. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. All— Amen. tam CG aay First Reading [Sir 3:2-6, 12-14] (Sit) The wise man Sirach teaches us that in order to live a family life pleasing to God, parents should love their children, and children should honor and care for their parents especially in their old age. ‘A reading from the Book of Sirach GOD SETS a father in honor over his children; a mother's authority he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother. My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins—a house raised in justice to you. — The word of the Lord.
