spotlighting the fatal affects of the global carbon footprint. Australian artist Newell Harry’s
work was inspired by the concept of the Kula Ring, a ceremonial exchange system practiced in
the Trobriand Islands, and will exhibit alongside an international cohort at the NTU Centre for

Del Kathryn
Barton
Chloe Mandryk
Barton maintains a childlike curiosity while exploring adult themes. Absurd and delightful
IDQWDV\FDUULHVWKURXJKKHUZRUNLQWKHSDLQWLQJsing blood-wings sing (2017) she reimagines the
1963 coming of age song ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ with female characters. In RED (2016), Cate
Blanchett plays a mother, re-enacting the redback spider’s deadly mating ritual. In both instances
Barton puts the strength and complexity of women at the fore. And, while some may see this
DUWLFXODWLRQRILGHQWLW\DVDQHVVHQWLDOLVWYLHZRIJHQGHULWGRHVQnWSHDFRFNDVGHíQLWLYH%DUWRQ
shared, ‘It has always been very important to me to personally own the narrative in my work as
erupting from my experience of inhabiting a woman’s body. These narratives are my offerings
as a woman, sometimes autobiographical, sometimes not, but always inspired by my lived, felt,
dreamed, lost experiences. I feel strongly about ‘the sisterhood’ and celebrate the belief that every
woman’s journey in her body is uniquely hers.’
23
Indeed, the artist presents women as porous, changeable and self-determined. The openings that
echo genitalia go beyond titillation. As plants spring up and thrive from these cavities we are reminded
about life cycles and the poetry of womanhood – one that can be miraculous, deadly and inert.

Franck Gohier
Tai Mitsuji
To describe Gohier as an
artist is both accurate and
inadequate. His practice is
built upon a vast cultural
substratum that spans the
disciplines of art-making, social
commentary, and historical
inquiry – mobilising elements
of all, without ever committing
to one. In describing himself,
Gohier adopts the moniker
of ‘urban archaeologist’
alongside that of ‘artist’, and
upon closer inspection it is
easy to understand why. Since
his adolescence, Gohier has
25
maintained an unyielding fascination with local history, literally digging around Darwin for
artefacts from the not-so-distant past. ‘We would go out with Mum and Dad and play in all the
rubble,’ he recalls. ‘Finding things just strewn through all the strata, broken asbestos, glass and
FRUUXJDWHGLURQWKHUHZHUHDOOWKHVHOD\HUVRIPHDQLQJSHRSOHVnKLVWRULHVZHUHMXVWVFDWWHUHGDOO
around.’ Despite the passing of time, nothing seems to have changed in Gohier’s fundamental
approach, as he continually seeks to reclaim abandoned histories. Gohier describes to me how he
found bullets on a local beach that dated back to WWII, and immediately found a place for them
in his aptly named work Shells. For him, the past is alive rather than dormant.
It would be misleading to reduce Gohier to the singularity of his immediate surroundings. His
work is often built upon the ground of popular culture, which offers a recognisable and accessible
point of departure for all viewers. ‘I’m able to use that as a visual hook to engage people,’ he
explains. ‘But then I add my own socio-political commentary on top of that, and overlay it with
other meanings.’ The result is an iconographic collision: Luke Skywalker wanders through the

Gohier observes. The familiar aspects of his artworks lull us into a false sense of security, before
seamlessly morphing popular culture into critical commentary.
There is a frenetic energy in the manner that Gohier discusses his work, which, it soon becomes
clear, suffuses his broader practice. As the artist explains, one moment he can be wholly
obsessed with an artistic subject, and the next he can have completely abandoned it. When I ask
KRZKHGHFLGHVZKHQDSLHFHLVFRPSOHWHKHSDXVHVWRUHîHFWm$ORWRIP\ZRUNVDUHQnWUHDOO\
that planned… they just develop as they happen,’ he confesses. ‘I get this feeling that I feel real
happy for a couple of hours and then I’m onto the next board – it’s just: next, next, next.’ While
this mentality has propelled the creation of his art over the past decades, it has also led to the
GHVWUXFWLRQRILW*RKLHUFRQíGHVWKDWKHRYHUSDLQWVDQGHYHQ\HDUVODWHUGHVWUR\VPXFKRI
his work, in an effort to come to some semblance of an artistic resolution. ‘I just put a hammer
through them, because they just aren’t working anymore,’ he casually remarks. And, undoubtedly
enjoying my audible horror, he adds ‘Oh well, it’s part of my process.’
Viewed against this backdrop, the art that has made it into ‘a thousand miles from everywhere’ is
all the more precious. The sculptures, prints, and paintings have all weathered Gohier’s judgment
and have been deemed worthy. They not only tell the story of a changing place, but also of an ever-
evolving artist.

Andrew Hazewinkel
Pip Mott
‘Before the Age of the Museum’ presents a series of recent works by Andrew Hazewinkel,

theory. The exhibition brings together new large-format photographic works with digitally photo-
mediated screen prints, video and sculpture alongside site-responsive works installed throughout

However, this is no museum. Hazewinkel’s works are divorced from their archaeological and
art historical context. Untitled (Antikythera 4) (2017) is a series of photographs depicting marble
statues unearthed from the famed Antikythera shipwreck, 1901. Shrouded in darkness, they
FRQMXUHXSSULYDWHYDXOWVRURFHDQGHSWKV7KHíJXUHVZHDUWKHVFDUVRIWLPHDVJHRORJLFDODQG
marine forces have coaxed a return to nature, disrupted by exhumation. The artist echoes these
forms with stones and shells unearthed from the recesses of Ingle Hall.
Alongside these curios, a readymade is prominently displayed on a disc of marble. This object was
dredged from the Tiber in Rome, its dimensions and features deceptively hinting at something
marvellous. What promises to be a marble head is in actual fact the cast of a plastic shopping bag.
Consistent with all great archaeological discoveries is the ability for material culture to catapult us
into the past. Despite its humble constitution, this object is saturated with urgency and ecstasy.
Material Collision (Staring Together at the Stars) Parts 1, 2, 3 (2017) features images of Roman
statues produced from 19th century glass negatives. These plates were created by the European
agent for the Boston Museum of Fine Art and are now held in the archive of the British School
of Rome. Relics from the great age of collecting, they document antiquities in methodical
‘shorthand’ that renders the classical objects thoroughly contemporary. Each image depicts
the nape of the neck and posterior cranium of an anonymous male at different stages of life.
Hazewinkel has scaled the heads up, monumentalising not their heroic status, but their
vulnerability. The enlarged imperfections from the original stone and plaster form moonscapes,
DQGWKHPDWHULDOLW\RIWKHíOPDEURDGVZHHSRIWKHJDOD[\3ULQWHGRQFDUERUXQGXPVDQGSDSHU
the textures are gently illuminated and the resulting effect is pathos and power in equal measure.
The artist describes Suspicious Marble (Omphale) (2017) as an academic excavation. He restores
the focus of the myth of Omphale, matriarch of Lydia, which traditionally champions Hercules.
Hazewinkel empowers Omphale, an immense curtain of leather hides draped from the ceiling,
each screen-printed with the image of her marble likeness. In a fabulous role-reversal, she adopts
WKHJDUERIWKHGHPLJRGrKLVOLRQVNLQîRZVIURPKHUVKRXOGHUVDQGKLVFOXEUHVWVDWKHUWKLJK
The inertia of stone is enlivened by the liquidity of leather. Once again, the artist employs a kind
of material alchemy.
Hazewinkel explains his interest in working with material culture as an effort ‘to establish and
uncover contemporary social legacies of ancient material culture, stories and archetypes.’ The
works sing to one another, associations freely refract and converge with an exacting harmony, in
such a way that time dissolves and humanity crystallises.

Tony Garifalakis
Camilla Wagstaff
Tony Garifalakis has taken to hoarding. But it’s not any sort of physical object that has captured
his attention. Rather he has, over the past few years, been meticulously collecting and scanning
imagery from obscure print materials – old Greek romance magazines, Italian product catalogues
from the 1970s, vintage hotel interiors books – to create a veritable ‘Cave of Wonders’ in pure
digital form. Now enormous, this immaterial archive forms the basis of the artist’s latest body
of work.

a touch of dark, incongruous humour. Garlifalakis asks us to question our social, political,
religious, artistic systems of belief and the institutions that uphold them.
The new work continues his interest in doing away with the prescribed meaning of an image. But
this time, in place of black spray cans, the computer is his weapon of choice. If you look closely,

Establishment Hotel last year. ‘Archiving is quite the time-consuming process, you naturally
start to consider the possibilities of what the images could become,’ says the artist. ‘Using the
hotel interior images seemed to work really perfectly for a show held in a hotel. There was a solid
contextual resonance that worked.’
‘Future History’ was the starting point for ‘Information Discharge Systems’, which is already
inspiration for an upcoming year of experimentation. ‘I was forced to make these works a physical
reality,’ says Garifalakis, ‘to think about how they will exist outside the screen, outside the digital
