Weekly Report

Introduction
During this week, I’ve studied on detail about the fire pump for sprinklers and hose reel system and done design
calculations of the fire pump. Also the design calculation of crane girder have been performed which are
described below:

Pump
The pump required in firefighting system is for delivery of water at required pressure and flow rate through the
pipelines. For the calculation of pump capacity, length of pipelines, numbers of valves & joints through pipelines,
head losses and diameter pump discharge should be calculated using following formula.
𝑓∗𝑙∗𝑣^2
Head loss due to friction = where f –frictional Factor
2∗𝑔∗𝐷

l –length of pipe
v – Velocity of water flow
D - Diameter of pipes
𝐾𝑏∗𝑣^2
Head loss due to bends = where Kb – Bending Cofficeint
2∗𝑔

Net Head of pump = Height of delivery + losses of head due to bends, valves, frictions, etc.
Pressure at Pump discharge = Demand pressure + head pressure
Power of Pump = ρ*g*Q*h where Q – Required water flow rate
H – Head of Pump
The demand pressure, flow rate and discharge time at hose reel and sprinklers are considered as per the standards
NFPA 13, 14, 15 and 20.

Crane Girder Section

Crane girder are the structures through which hoist trolley moves from one end to another end of the span, which
may be single or double. For the low capacity up to 15 tons and lower span length single girder is used while for
high capacity and larger span double girder is used. The section of girder structure can be I section, H- section,
channel section and Box section.
After selecting the girder section, hook approach, dead and live loads and maximum wheel load, bending moment
and shear force on girder due to horizontal and vertical loadings should be calculated at first and the section is
selected. The web and flange dimension of section are considered from IS 800 and IS 807. The section must be
safe in bending and shear capacity in order to finalize the design of girder section. If the selected section is not
safe under the shear capacity for given requirement intermediate stiffeners are added in section as per IS 800. The
maximum deflection should be calculated and must be less than 1/750 of span for span greater than 12 m and less
than 1/600 of span for span lesser than 12m as per the IS standard.
