Permaculture Governance

John and Kim propose an experiential workshop relating permaculture and a new form of
governance called Sociocracy.

Sociocracy, or ‘collaborative governance’, hard-wires ‘People Care’ and ‘Fair Share’ into the
fabric of an organisation by ensuring that every member has an equivalent voice in policy.
Like other living systems a sociocratic organization relies on cyclical feedback processes to
stay in tune with its members and its environment. Some call Sociocracy ‘organisational
permaculture’.

Take aways include methods to help sloppy meetings make crisp decisions and a unique
way of conducting elections selects a person without creating winners and losers. Each
person will interact with the information as well as being able to see how this can be linked to
your own living and working practice. Take the methods and concepts back to your
permaculture group and try them out!

Also known as ‘dynamic governance’, sociocracy is used in organisations in Australia, Brazil,

the United States, Canada, and in many countries on the continent. Several organizations in
southern England and the Forres area of Scotland are using it.
