There is no template for this assignment. Please complete this assignment using a word processing.
You must show all work. Don't forget to put your name(s) on the assignment.

1. Your exhaust hoods requires 300 cfm (cubic feet per minute) per foot of exhaust hood. Your kitchen
has four (4) hoods, each eight (8) feet long. How much energy (in BTU/hr) will it take to heat the air
entering the entering the building to replace the air exhausted by the hoods for each of the three levels
of makeup air listed below? The specific heat for air is 0.0175 BTU per cubic feet of air per degree
Fahrenheit. The average outside air temperature is 20°F and the air is heated to 125°F before it enters
the room. The equation for calculating the energy needed to warm the outside air is:

Energy (BTU/hr) = Ventilation rate (ft3/hr) * Specific Heat (BTU/(ft3 °F) * Temperature Change (°F)

Express your answer to nearest whole number. (7 points)

a. 0% Makeup air (you must heat all air exhausted).

Energy =

b. 20% Makeup air (you only need heat 80% of the air exhausted).

Energy =

c. 60% Makeup air (you only need heat 40% of the air exhausted).

Energy =

2. If the gas used to heat the building in Question 1 costs $0.50 per therm and there are 100,000
BTUs per therm, how much will it cost a month to heat the air entering the building to replace the air
exhausted by the hood for each of the options above? Assume your heat plant is 85% efficient and
that the hoods run for 16 hours each day. Assume that there are 30.5 days in a month. Calculate
your answer to the nearest dollar. (4 points)

a. 0% Makeup air (you must heat all air exhausted).

Monthly Cost =

b. 20% Makeup air (you only need heat 80% of the air exhausted).

Monthly Cost =
c. 60% Makeup air (you only need heat 40% of the air exhausted).

Monthly Cost =

3. You are constructing a new 100 room hotel. You have a choice of a central HVAC system or an
individual room HVAC system.

The room system costs $1,000 each installed. To purchase the system you will put 10% down and pay
and finance the remaining amount at 2.99% annual interest for five years. Your monthly payment
will remain constant at $1,617 for the entire five years and is paid at the end of the month. The total
for all payments will be $107,020. Maintenance for the room units is $100.00 each per year with an
expected annual increase of 2.00%. This payment is made at the end of the year. Assume that with
0% air recirculation your average monthly energy bill will be $6,500.00, paid at the end of the
monthly. You are allowed to have recirculation with the rooms system. Assume that the recirculation
will cut your monthly energy costs by 25%. You are expecting energy prices to rise by 0.20% per
month.

The central HVAC system costs $110,000 installed. To purchase the system you will put 10% down
and pay and finance the remaining amount at 2.99% annual interest for five years. Your monthly
payment will remain constant at $1,800 for the entire five years and is paid at the end of the month.
The total for all payments will be $117,680. Maintenance for the central system is $500.00 per year
with an expected annual increase of 2.00%. This payment is made at the end of the year. Assume that
with 0% air recirculation your average monthly energy bill will be $6,000.00, paid at the end of the
monthly. You not allowed to have any recirculation with the central system. You are expecting
energy prices to rise by 0.20% per month.

The systems will last for 20 years and the hotel owner demands a 1% monthly return on investment.
The annual return on investment is 12.68%.

ieffective = ((1 + inominal) / (1 + Inflation)) – 1

PV = FV * (1 + i)-n
PV = A * (((1 + ieffective)n - 1) / (ieffective * (1 + ieffective)n))

What will be your total savings if you install the rooms system compared to installing the central
system to the nearest dollar? Express all percentages as decimals and calculate ieffective to four
significant digits. (9 points)
