Procedures 1

1. Take an Erlenmeyer flask from the Containers shelf and place it on the workbench.

2. Take a balance from the Instruments shelf and place it on the workbench.

3. Weigh the empty Erlenmeyer flask. Record its mass in your Lab Notes and return the Erlenmeyer flask
to the workbench.
(Remember to zero the balance before weighing the flask.)

4. Add 50 mL 5% Vinegar from the Materials shelf to the Erlenmeyer flask. Record the mass of the
vinegar in the flask.

5. Place the flask back on the workbench and rezero your scale.

6. Take a new Erlenmeyer flask from the Containers shelf and place it on the scale. Double-click on the
Erlenmeyer flask to open the Item Properties window. Select Closed to plug the flask with an air-tight
stopper.

7. Weigh the closed empty Erlenmeyer flask. Record its mass and return it to the workbench.

8. Add 50 mL 1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) from the Materials shelf to the closed empty flask. Record
the mass of the sodium hydroxide in the flask.

9. Pour all of the vinegar into the Erlenmeyer flask containing sodium hydroxide. Watch for evidence of a
reaction and record what you see.

10. Weigh the closed Erlenmeyer flask containing vinegar and sodium hydroxide. Record the total mass.

11. Clear your station by dragging the containers to the recycling bin beneath the workbench.

Procedures 2

1. Take an Erlenmeyer flask from the Containers shelf and place it on the workbench.

2. Weigh the empty Erlenmeyer flask. Record its mass in your Lab Notes and return the flask to the
workbench. (Remember to zero the balance before weighing.)

3. Add 20 mL water from the Materials shelf to the Erlenmeyer flask. Record the mass.

4. Take a new Erlenmeyer flask from the Containers shelf and place it on the scale. Double-click on the
Erlenmeyer flask to open the Item Properties window. Select Closed to plug the flask with an air-tight
stopper.9. Clear your station by dragging any containers and instruments from the workbench to the
recycling bin.

7. Weigh the closed empty Erlenmeyer flask. Record its mass and return it to the workbench.

8. Add 2 g Alka Seltzer from the Materials shelf to the closed empty flask. Record the mass of flask
containing Alka Seltzer.
9. Pour all of the water into the Erlenmeyer flask containing Alka Seltzer. Watch for evidence of a reaction
and record what you see.

10. Weigh the closed Erlenmeyer flask containing water and Alka Seltzer. Record the total mass.
