LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 7 SCIENCE

I.OBJECTIVE:
1. Identify and familiarize names and symbols of elements in the periodic table.

II. CONTENT: ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS

III. LEARNING RESOURCES: Science Links by Rex Bookstore pg. 63-66

Science 7 Learners material pg. 27-45
IV. PROCEDURES:

Pre-Activity

1. Motivation
Do you always use your full name when you give others your personal information? Do you have your
nickname? Where did you get your nickname? Is it really necessary that you get your nickname through your first
name? Let us now identify the names and symbols of common elements found in our periodic table.

2. Presentation of objective.

A. ACTIVITY (Group Task)

Group the students into 8, each group will receive 18 strips of colored paper that contains the name/
symbol of an element. The students will be given 5 minutes to identify/match the correct
name/symbol of each element. After the task they will post their work in the blackboard for checking.

After the activity, let them report their work and check whether their answers are all correct.

B. ANALYSIS
1. How do you find our task?
2. Where do you think the symbol of elements came from?
3. What are the elements that have a 1 letter symbol? 2 letters symbol?
4. What are the symbols for lithium, chlorine, argon, calcium and manganese?
5. Are there symbols of elements in the periodic table that were not derived from its name?
6. What is the short way of writing element name?
7. Define element.

C. ABSTRACTION

Element – is a simplified form of matter which cannot be decomposed by ordinary chemical means. It
contains only one kind of atom.
1. Every element has a name. Scientists agreed to give symbols for each element. Notice that most of the one-
letter symbols are the first letters of these elements.
2. For the two-letter symbols, most of them start with the first letter of the element. Notice that the second letter
in the symbol may be any letter found in the element’s name. Notice as well that only the first letter is
capitalized for the two-letter symbols.
3. There are symbols that use letters that were taken from the
ancient name of the element. Examples of ancient names are ferrum (iron), argentum (silver), hydrargyrum
(mercury) and plumbum (lead).

D. APPLICATION

Let us apply what you have learned!!!

The game is like a Quiz bee. The students will be group again. Each group will have their
representative that will try to answer the correct name/symbol of an element. Each number will have different
representative per group. The group that has the most number of correct answers will be declared winner.

Quiz. ¼ sheet of paper

I. Direction: Give the name or symbol of the common elements in the periodic table.

1. Oxygen 6. Mg 11. Cobalt

2. Nitrogen 7. K 12. Au
3. Hydrogen 8. N 13. Barium
4. Carbon 9. Ni 14. B
5. Chlorine 10. Cu 15. Silicon

V. ASSIGNMENT
1. Use a modern Periodic table. On the basis of the names of the elements, list down elements, which you
think, are named after each of the following. (Have at least 3 elements in each list.)
a. place/town/country
b. person
c. mineral
d. mythological character
e. planet/heavenly body
2. Identify the elements that use their Ancient name for their symbols.
