Development and Engagement Activities

d. PROCEDURES

A. Introduction
Preliminary Activity

Introduction

*Begin with a brief discussion on the elements students are familiar with, like iron,
copper, oxygen, and carbon.
*Ask students to share what they know about these elements. Are they similar or
different? Can they think of any other elements like these?
*Introduce the concept of elements and explain that elements can be categorized into
two main groups: metals and non-metals.

1
Elements are the simplest form of substances. This means that whatever you do
with an element, it remains to be the same element. Its physical state may change but
the identity of the element will not. It may form compounds with other elements but the
element will never form anything simpler than it already is.
Most of the elements are metals. They are shiny, malleable and ductile but just in
varying degrees — like electrical and thermal conductivity. Nonmetals are electrically
non conductive except for some forms of carbon.

B. Development
*How are metals different from non metals? How are they similar?

* PROPERTIES OF METALS, NON METALS and METALLOIDS

*Most of the time, metals are shiny ( LUSTROUS ).

*Many metals are ductile. This means that metals can be drawn into
wires.
*Some metals are malleable. This means that they can be hammered
or rolled into thin sheets without breaking.
Some metals are magnetic. This means that they are attracted by a
magnet.
Other properties of metals
Electrical conductivity
Thermal conductivity
Heat conductor

Properties of non-metals:
*Dull or not shiny
*Poor conductors of heat and electricity
*Not malleable or ductile

Give examples of metals and nonmetals and their uses.

2
C. Engagement Learning Task. 7.1: Think-Pair-Share

A. In the figure below, you will find the elements that your body is made up.

What element are you made up of the most? Is it a metal or a nonmetal? Of all the
elements reported in the graph, how many are metals?
How about nonmetals?

B. Refer to the figure below. The figure shows how much of one element is
present in the Earth’s crust relative to the other elements. What element is
the most abundant in the Earth’s crust? What comes second? Are these
metals or nonmetals?

Research a common use or application of a metal and a non-metal.

Write a short paragraph explaining the use and why that element is suitable for it.

D. Assimilation Read with understanding. Choose the best answer.

1. Copper, aluminum and gold are metals. Which is not true about metals?
A. Metals are ductile.
B. Metals are malleable
C. Metals are good insulators.
D. Metals are are good conductors of heat.

2. If you will be making utensils, which properties of elements are you NOT going to
consider?
A. Good electrical conductivity
B. Sonorousness
C. Good thermal conductivity
D. High melting point

3. Which property of metals is used for making bells and strings of musical instruments
like sitar and violin?
A. Sonorousness
B. Malleability
C. Ductility
D. Conductivity

4. Amalgam is an alloy of;

A. Copper and tin

3
B. Mercury
C. Lead and tin
D. Coper and zinc

5. Which of the following non metal is lustrous?

A. Sulfur b. Oxygen
B. Nitrogen d. Iodine

INDEX OF MASTERY
