Simple Scientific Investigation
Welcome Science learners! Perhaps, Scientists in the making. In this subject, you will be engaging in various activities that will
make you think, analyze ,investigate and conclude. So let’s start the journey together.
Everyday we witness and experiences different things which often lead us to some queries on how certain things take
place. Science can helps us with this, there is a systematic way of solving problems and this is what we called the scientific
method. In doing any scientific Investigation ,you have to remember the steps of scientific method:
A. Make observations. Through our sense,we can notice and observe the things around us.
B. Ask a question. From our observation, most of the time we come up with a question or problem
C. Formulate a hyphothesis. Hypothesis is an educated guess. It is the possible answer/solution to the problem.
D. Conduct an experiment. We conduct an experiment to test whether our given hypothesis is correct or not.
E. Record and analyze the result. From the result of our experiment, we gather data and information that will help us
to decide whether to acceppt or reject the hypothesis.
F. Draw conclusions. State your findings based on your data and analysis.
Study the given example, then answer the given assessment.
Karen likes eating apples. One day, she slices an apple for her snack. While eating, she immediately notice that the
slices of the apple slowly turning brown. She then come up with a question, Why do the slices of the apple turn
brown? How can I prevent the slices from turning brown? “Maybe because I did not put them on water”she said,
and this become her hypothesis. So she decided to conduct a simple experiment .She slice again another apple,
she put one slice of apple on each glass of water, milk, juice and baking soda then she left one slice on a plate.
After few minutes, she looked again on her experiment and find out something. The slices of the apple on a plate
turned brown so as the slices that were put on the other liquids.Howeover, the slice that was put on the water did
not turned brown. From these data and information, She concluded that the water can keep the slices of apple
from turning brown.
Multiple Choice: From the situation that you have read, Tell what specific step of Scientific method is being described by the
statements below.Choose your answer from the given options inside the box.
Observation Problem Hypothesis Experiment Gathering data Conclusion
1. Karen had noticed that the slices of apple slowly turns brown.
Observation ________________________________________
2. “ How can I prevent the slices form turning brown?”
Problem____________________________________________
3. She puts one slice of apple on the different liquids and left one slice on a plate.
Experiment__________________________________________
4. “Maybe because I did not put them on water”.
Hypothesis __________________________________________
5. The slice on a plate turns brown. The slices on other liquids turn brown. The slice on the water does not turn brown.
Gathering data _______________________________________
6. I therefore conclude that the water prevents the slice of an apple from turning brown.
Conclusion ___________________________________________

Moreover, an element may combine with another element to form a compound. Therefore, a compound is
consists of two or more kinds of atoms since it is a combination of two or more elements. For example, Carbon and
oxygen are two different elements, when they are combined, carbon dioxide is formed. Carbon dioxide is an example of
a compound. Carbon and Oxygen are now called the constituent elements.
B. Give the constituent elements of the given compounds.
Compound Constituent elements
1. Iron sulfide Iron (Fe)+ Sulfur ( S)
2. Sodium chloride Sodium (Na) + Chlorine (Cl)
3. Iron oxide Iron ( Fe ) + Oxygen (O)
4. Water(HꙅO) Hydrogen + Oxygen (O)
5. Magnesium oxide Magnesium (Mg) + Oxygen ( O)
