Part 1: DIVERSITY OF MATERIALS IN THE ENVIRONMENT
I. INTRODUCTION
You have probably seen, touched, and tasted hundreds of different things in your life. You have touched wood, steel, ice and many more. Look around
you. Is it amazing that you are able to witness the beauty of the environment? In this module, you will find out about pure substances, specifically elements.
Elements are pure substances that exist as unique materials on our planet, since these peculiar forms of matter already have their own set of properties and
compositions that do not change from one sample to another.
II. LESSON COVERAGE
MELCS:
Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds.(S7MT-Ig-h-5)
This lesson has the following topics:
Pure substances
LESSON 1 : ELEMENTS  Gather information about common elements from the periodic

EXPLORE
Activity 1: JUMBLED LETTERS
Arrange the jumbled names of elements. The descriptions provided below will help you unlock this task.Write your answers in the answer sheet.
RNIO Considered s the king of metals since it is first used in ancient times.
XYNEGO The gas of life, responsible for life exist.
CLCMUAI The element that comprises the bones and teeth.
NNOE Widely used in advertising signs.
DLOG Used to make jewelries.
MRRCYEU Found on thermometers.
CRABNO Found in all living organisms
SDMUIO Combines with chlorine to make salt.
HLOCNERI Used in bleaches and purifying pools.
MNMULUAI Used in kitchen utensils.

Activity 2: The Not-So- Long Story of Elements.

Below is a story where there are names of elements. List them one at a time. Write your answer in the answer sheet.
“Birth of the Elements”
Long time ago, there lived two elements named Iron and Oxygen that came from the Earth below and heavens above. Their love was so great that Oxygen
gave birth to other elements to sustain human life. Gold came first followed by Nitrogen. That did not end giving of new birth as the twins, Hydrogen and
Helium, came third. Mercury, Silver ,Lead, Platinum, Zinc, Carbon, and Cobalt came next. This made the couple happy as they saw how their offspring
elements help mankind. This wonderful unity between them and humans throughout the years led them to decide to produce more elements. Chlorine,
Iodine, Silicon, Phosphorus, Selenium, Nickel, Copper, Tungsten, Titanium, Magnesium, Potassium and Argon came out from this union. The others
came after as the centuries went on and made the couple very satisfied of their existence on Earth.
Have you arranged the jumbled letters? Have you listed all the elements in the story?
END OF EXPLORE
FIRM - UP
Take a look on the pictures and keenly observe each. What have you notice?

Figure 1: Can ( Aluminum can) Figure 2: Rock ( Iron ore) Figure 3: Salt (Sodium)

The pictures are materials that contain elements. How do you know if a substance is an element? An element is a pure substance means that it is a form of
matter that have definite and chemical composition that cannot be broken down into simpler substances but can be chemically combined with one another to
produce another substance. This makes elements as a homogeneous example of matter. Meaning grind a salt into tiny grains, it will still be a salt that is made
up of sodium. This makes element as the main building block of matter. Always remember that an elements are made up only one type of atom.
Please read pages 48 to 50 of Exploring Life through Science 7 book.

Periodic table of elements: Please refer to the cover page of your book.
 The table arranges elements into vertical columns(groups) and horizontal rows (periods) to display these commonalities.
 Chemical elements have abbreviations, called Element Symbols.
Note that the symbols consist of one, two, or three letters. The first letter of an element symbol is always capitalized and the second and
third letters, if present,, are in lowercase.
 Each element is unique. It can combine with one elements, another metal, or non-metal to form a compound. Just like them, people
interact with one another to form a community. It is better to be an element and stand alone or to combine with another element to
form a compound/alloy?
 The number above the symbol is called Atomic Number.
Note: The atomic number is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
 The symbols of some elements are derived directly from their English name. But the symbols of the other elements are derived from
their Latin names.
 There are also some elements that are named after the famous scientists, countries, states and even planets. (Refer to your periodic
table of elements or watch the video I posted in our facebook page.)

LESSON 2: METALS AND NON METALS

EXPLORE
In lesson 1 we discovered that elements are pure substances that consist only one atom. In this section you will learn that elements are classified into metals
and non metals based on their properties.
Activity 1: Metal and Non-metal activity
Please read page 51 of Exploring Life through Science 7 book. After reading please answer the question below.
 What properties distinguish metals from non metals?

Activity 2: Periodic Table Reading.

Elements are classified as metals

and nonmetals. As shown in the
periodic table, the elements are
shaded in three different colors.
The elements that are shaded in
gray are the metals, the elements
that are shaded in gold are the
nonmetals, and the elements with
light green shades are the
metalloids and semimetals.

Refer to page 51 of your book

about their properties.

Do you have fun exploring the periodic table of elements? What are the properties of metals and nonmetals?

Closure: Elements are substances that are made up of only one type of atom. It is classified into metals and nonmetals. Metals are generally hard, lustrous,
malleable, and ductile. They readily conduct electricity and heat. Nonmetals are generally gases or solids, which are not lustrous, not malleable, and not
ductile. They are usually poor conductors of electricity and heat.
