LIFE (Learning Design)

L – Look Straight
This is the first part of the learners’ flight in learning. The
learners will connect to God in this step. The different
competences are introduced, faith and learning are
blended that connects to a higher learning.

I – Investigate More
This is the second step where prior knowledge and
review are given that will allow integration of previous and
new lesson. Content of the lesson is presented, activities are
carried out bit by bit. Carry out some principles of life in this
step.

F – Firm Up
This is the third step. This part allows the learners to
master the competences through the activities and skills
provided for them.

E – Exhibit Results
This is the highest part of learning where the learners
will demonstrate their learning in real-life. Rubrics is
provided to assess for excellent learning product. Prayer is
offered.

MODULE 1
Topic: Matter and Pure Substances (Elements)

OOK STRAIGHT!

Time with God (3R’s)

“You Matter”

READ:
“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before Me.” Isaiah
49:16

REMEMBER:
Our Heavenly Father never created anything worthless. We barely have to open the Bible to
discover everything God made is intentional, unique, and filled with purpose. Scripture is
teeming with statements about our value and worth in Christ. While Scripture confirms that
we aren't worthless, the world determines our value by different standards. Let’s face it; we
tend to judge ourselves by those same earthly standards! Let’s stay close to God’s Word,
where the truth is laid out for us, we can easily be burdened and wounded by insults and lies.

The verse tells us that God has engraved us on the palms of His hands. Engraving is
permanent, and it’s not easy or quick. In fact, it's a task that is only completed if it’s worth
it. You’re worth it. You matter.

REFLECT:
Do you know someone who feels useless for some time? How can you tell him or her that he
or she matters to God and that he or she is important?

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Pupils must have:
…. known the use and importance of the matter around him/her.

Learning Targets:
a. I can identify the components of matter
b. I can Tell the characteristics of each classification of elements

Faith to live by: “Everything around us comes from God”

Are you aware that the world in which you live in consists of an enormous variety of
material substances? Look around you, what do you see? Inside your house, you see tables,
chairs, clothes, appliances, furniture, soap, water, and so forth. These are all matter. When
you went outside of your house, you see trees, roads, vehicles people and many more. These
are also matter. Practically, everything around you is matter.
In this module, you will learn deeper about matter; what it is composed of and its
classification.

WARM- UP

Draw atleast 5 items you found in your home. Label them as solid, liquid or gas. Color your
work.

COMPONENTS OF MATTER
What is matter made of?

ARRANGEMENT OF MOLECULES
Matter is made up of the smallest particle called molecule.
A molecule is the smallest particle of a substance that can exist and still have the chemical
properties of that substance. Molecules of matter
are always moving.

The molecules of solids are more compact so they

can only move in place. There is a strong
attraction between the molecules. This is the
reason why solids have definite shapes.
The molecules of liquid are far apart. They slip slide
out of their places. This is why liquids flow and do
not have definite shapes.
The molecules of gases are farther apart than in
liquids so they move freely.

What is an atom?
All molecules are made up of smaller particles called atoms.
An atom is the smallest particle of matter. An atom is so tiny that only a powerful microscope
– the electron microscope – can be used to see it. Millions of atoms combine to make all the
different materials around us.
How an atom looks like?
An atom may be likened to the solar system. In the solar system, the
sun is the center and the planets move around it. In an atom, the
center is the nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons.

A proton is a positively-charged particle while neutron is an electrically

– neutral particle. Like the planets moving around the sun, electrons
move around the nucleus. They are negatively-charged particles. An
atom is composed mostly of space where the electrons move about.

Different kinds of matter are made up of different kinds of atom. But

the three particles namely: protons, electrons and neutrons are all the same in all kinds of
atom.

Look at the diagram below and notice that each atom has the same number of
protons and electrons.

CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER
Pure substances are substances that are made up of only one kind of particles and have a
fixed or constant structure. Pure substances are further classified as elements and
compounds.

Elements are substances that cannot be broken into two or more simpler substances by any
physical or chemical method. It consists of atoms of the same kind. The elements are the
basic substances, which make all kinds of different substances around us. We call element as
basic substance, because we cannot divide it into two or more simpler substances by any
physical or chemical method. Element consist of only one kind of atoms. Therefore, how
much we break it; we will end up with the same kind of
atoms.
Let’s understand with an example – Different materials or
substances are used for building a house. To build any house,
we need mud, cement, bricks, sand, steel, and wood. By
using these materials in different quantities and ratios, we
can either make a simple house or a huge building. Much in
the same way, in nature, there are elements, which combine
to make all kinds of substances.

Hydrogen, helium, carbon, oxygen, calcium, nitrogen, sodium, iron, silver, gold and mercury
are a few examples of elements. So far we have discovered total – 118 types of elements. 92
elements out of 118 occur naturally in rocks, soil, air, and water. Meanwhile scientists create
the remaining 26 artificially in a lab.

Elements are classified as metals, non-metals and metalloids.

Some example of metals:
▪ Copper
▪ Nickel
▪ Zinc

Some examples of non-metals:

▪ Carbon
▪ Sulfur

Some examples of Metalloids

▪ Boron
▪ Silicon

The arrangement of elements is found in the

Periodic Table of Elements. Elements in the
Periodic table are written in symbols. Symbols
of elements are the shorthand of writing the
name of elements. Most symbols of elements
are taken from the first letter or first two letters
of its names. Example H is taken from the first
letter of Hydrogen. Some elements have a
German or Latin name. The first letter or first two letters are taken from the German or Latin
name. For example, W is the symbol of Tungsten. It is taken from the first letter of its German
name "Wolfram." Au, the symbol of Gold, is taken from its Latin name, "Aurum.

IRM UP!
Test 1 Identify the following. Find your answer inside the box and write it before each
number.
Solid
____________1. It is the center of an atom Atoms
____________2. Its molecules are far apart and don’t have a definite shape Nucleus
____________3. Particles that made up a molecule Liquid
____________4. It is positively-charged particle Gas
____________5. Has a definite shape and the molecules are compact Protons

Test 2 Tell the characteristics of the following classification of elements.

Classification of Elements
Metals Non-Metals Metalloids

XHIBIT!
Performance Task: Make a list of 7 things you see in your house and write its use and
importance.

List of things: USE IMPORTANCE

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
There are still lot of important things around us. What you’ve list are just some of it. We
enjoy life and make our life quite easy sometimes because of these things and we should
always remember that all of it comes from God.
