Statement of Goals and Choices (SOGC)

• Briefly explain the information contained in your submission. What were you trying
to say? Why? This should be a few sentences (e.g., “This submission contains a
theory of writing paper that examines (insert theory topic here). I was trying to…”)
This submission contains a theory of how being a good reader ends preparing you to be
a good writer too. I was trying to figure it out good techniques that can help us on
writing, and several of them were “focus on what you read, what do you like about the
author, so you can think of that while writing”, etcetera. Also, I came out realizing what I
have always talked with my dad, reading makes you way smarter, it leads you to open
your imagination, to learn new words, to make yours a new vocabulary, and much more.
So I came to realize reading & writing come together, and is the best way to succeed in
both, by being related with both worlds.

• Discuss each and every choice you made in service of the goals you mentioned
before. (This will be the longest section of your statement, and could cover several
paragraphs.)
I am a person that enjoys talking, but when I need to write I have a lot to say too.
Through this assignment I got to express myself in a detailed way (because is
fundamental, and this gives the magic to the books we love to read, etcetera), but also
learning to be brief, clear and concise in my writing. I enjoyed my topic because my
topic is related on finding the best writing technique to follow, so while searching for
them I was also writing my own essay, so I got to apply those techniques in my writing
and also, to focus on those points for my own revision. I was able to work with my
sources, I also enjoyed having my own experience as a source and getting to share
about reading from my point of view, how it helped me, and more. Your first draft is not
going to be perfect, but you will work for it, and I got to the conclusion that you never
stop learning, that every time you are adding more vocabulary on you, that by reading
you are catching the author and you can later apply that in your own work, reading &
writing definitely come together, and both are things that you need to take time on
accomplish one or the other, details are very important here. In the moment that we are
reading, every single one of us is getting the story differently and we are imagine the
scene in our head, and by writing we are being the ones sharing a peace of us to the
reader.

• What work does your submission accomplish? How? For whom?

My submission is the result of weeks of work, and changes in my text. Since the
beginning trying to decide what topic could help me write. Now that I am in college
essays will come very constantly, so knowing how to develop a theory, how to do
research, where to focus for feedback and more will help me. My essay is not only
dedicated for freshman as me, but It can help everyone in this journey of writing,
because I included different techniques, and my own experience with results.

• Explain who and what helped you accomplish your objective.

Primary, the teacher, by every week talking to us about the assignment and what to
expect. At the beginning of the project everything seemed very uncertain, but going
throughout the assignments, finding our lines of inquiry and more, I got to make up my
work. For me, receiving feedback is a very fundamental step in your writing, so that was
an important point fo improvement too. My experience, and improvement that I had
when starting to make reading as a hobby and different sources as: articles, videos, ted
talks and more, helped me throughout this essay.

• Explain what you have learned about engaging in inquiry, making rhetorical
choices, doing research, and using sources.
Since summer, when I took English classes too I learned and worked with inquiry, and I
found the importance and efficiency of it, so asking ourselves, trying to search for
different opinions, videos and explanations where the greatest base for this assignment,
while searching for Ted Talks, and also watching some that the teacher included in the
week made me realize how helpful they are, and even when they help you learn, or get
something powerful for yourself, they are not boring videos, but helpful ones. I got to the
conclusion that spending my free time watching different Ted Talks, than on social
media would make a big change in me or in my way of thinking. About using sources, I
can say I love searching for them in different ways and reading what they have to offer
me and what can they add to my writing, but I would like to work more on the way I
include them in my essay, I have the information but I struggle on where and how to
added, without losing the fluidity of the text.
