Dr. Sharity Nelson

Reflection Essay

Being in ENGL 1301 for this entire semester, I realized that writing is an intricate, iterative

process with multiple steps, such as prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. I also discovered

that the writing process is recursive, meaning that while a writer works on a draft, they

frequently go back and review prior phases of the process. Freewriting, outlining, brainstorming,

and peer review were among the exercises and assignments that improved my understanding of

the writing process. I was able to refine my concepts, arrange my ideas, and get peer input thanks

to these exercises. By giving me additional chances to hone and polish my writing abilities, this

coursework expanded on my understanding of the writing process that I had acquired from

previous classes. Having Dr. Nelson as our professor on side I learned that frequent writing plays

a crucial role in enhancing student learning like content retention and critical analysis,

integration with course content which enhanced our student engagement and understanding.

In ENGL 1301, the exploration of analysis was a journey through textual landscapes, where we

dissected language, context, and meaning. I have learned from this course that writing effectively

requires examination. I discovered that analysis entails dissecting lengthy texts or complicated

concepts into manageable chunks and analyzing how those chunks interact to produce meaning.

Writing analytical essays, annotating, and closely reading were among the exercises and

assignments that improved my comprehension of the analysis process. Through these exercises, I
Shrestha2

was able to smooth my critical thinking abilities and learn how to recognize themes, motifs, and

patterns in texts. Let’s take an example where we were tasked to write a visual analysis essay

where we had to select a picture and then read the image in depth and then write an essay in a

way that we can be able to create the visual on the readers mind of the exact picture we chose. In

summary, this course deepened my understanding of analyzing the theory and now I approach

information with a more informed and analytical mindset.

Revision is a crucial step in the writing process, as I discovered when I was editing one of

my essays. I changed my thesis statement, included extra evidence to back up my assertions, and

rearranged my paragraphs among other changes I made to my essay. Based on input from the

instructor, in-class exercises, and the general course topics, I modified these components. As an

example, I provided more evidence to support my arguments and rewrote my thesis statement to

be more focused and explicit in response to feedback from my peers. These adjustments

strengthened my essay's overall quality and strengthened the persuasiveness of my thesis. I

learned that drafting is one of the most important steps in the essay writing process. It helped me

to improve clarity and organize my information. Brainstorming, prewriting, drafting, and the

revision process can not only be useful for essay writing but for other courses and writing

situations too. They help generate ideas, organize thoughts, and refine content for better clarity

and coherence. These steps are applicable beyond essays, helping you effectively communicate

in various writing tasks. Let’s take programming in C++ as an example. Brainstorming can help

me generate ideas for coding projects, prewriting can involve planning the structure of my

program, drafting refers to writing the actual code for better functionality. Let’s talk about Essay

3 revising this essay, it assisted me in honing my case and making sure it was solidly backed by
Shrestha3

data. Ultimately, it assisted me in refining my writing style and making sure my essay was

efficient, succinct, and clear.

Choosing what modifications to make and preserve was the hardest part of doing a final edit on

my essay. It was challenging for me to strike a balance between my own thoughts and vision for

the essay and the criticism I got from my peers and instructor. The part of correcting my essay

for grammar and punctuation was the easiest. I discovered that I could quickly identify and fix

the majority of my mistakes. To be honest, the essay 3 for me was really tough. I had a hard time

from where to start and where to end. I went through the article thoroughly to gather just few

information which wasn’t even enough for me to write the essay on after that I asked my

professor about the things and she helped me a lot to what exactly to find, where exactly to find

and well that did help quite a lot. Lets talk about an example I was having a real hard time to

even find enough resource for pathos, ethos but my professor helped me figure it out. And

talking about the least challenging part I would say this essay was abit tough for me entirely so

there was no any least challenging according to me.

I used a variety of strategies, such as employing examples, succinct language, and visual aids, to

explain course concepts to a broad audience on my website. By explaining important

terminology and offering examples, I was able to make the genre analysis, visual text analysis,

and rhetorical analysis in my unit writing assignment explanations clear to someone who is not

familiar with these genres. For instance, I explained what a "rhetorical situation" is and gave an

illustration of how to apply it to text analysis. In order to better explain my ideas and make them

easier for my audience to understand, I also employed visual aids like charts and diagrams.
Shrestha4

Using understandable language, I made care to provide a comprehensive explanation of course

concepts on my website. When talking about the writing process, for instance, I deconstructed it

into manageable parts like drafting, revising, editing, and brainstorming. In order to ensure that

the wider audience understood how these ideas related to their own writing, I also included

examples from real-world situations. Clear definitions and examples were the main emphasis of

my explanations for rhetorical analysis, genre analysis, and visual text analysis. In order to

prevent confusing someone who isn't familiar with these genres, I tried to avoid using jargon or

technical phrases. Rather than using abstract concepts, I explained them through relatable

examples, such as dissecting a social media post or a movie poster.

The hardest thing about this course for me to master was time management. I observed that in

order to produce high-quality work, I had to dedicate a considerable amount of time to each task,

which occasionally meant not having time for other pursuits. In order to keep on course and

fulfill deadlines, I also discovered that I needed to be self-motivated and disciplined. Learning

how to strike a balance between my personal thoughts and voice and the assignment criteria was

one of the challenges I encountered during the analytical and writing stages. I discovered that in

order to produce work that was both unique and satisfied the assignment requirements, I had to

approach each task with creativity and flexibility. My personal opinion is that the writing and

analyzing procedures in ENGL 1301 were the most difficult. While there were other obstacles I

had to overcome, efficiently arranging my ideas and thoughts was by far the most difficult. It

was occasionally challenging for me to express my points in a way that was both obvious and

logical. Finding the ideal balance between avoiding information overload and offering sufficient

data to back up my claims proved to be another difficult task. Learning how to choose and
Shrestha5

include pertinent evidence without overloading the reader required some time. All things

considered, the writing and analytical procedures demanded a great deal of critical thinking and

focus on detail. However, with practice and criticism, I was able to get better and get past these

obstacles.

I found the reading portion of this course to be the least difficult. Since I've always enjoyed

reading and studying literature, I had no trouble picking up on the course materials and

comprehending the subject. One of the things I found to be strong points in my analytical and

writing skill sets was my capacity for critical interpretation and analysis of data. I discovered that

I could recognize important points made in the books we read, assess the supporting data, and

derive insightful conclusions from them. This ability enabled me to create compelling and well-

supported arguments, which aided me in both the analysis and writing processes. I also found

that my writing attention to detail was a strength. I focused on sentence form, grammar, and

punctuation, which was helpful to me. My ability to express myself clearly and effectively was

aided by my careful attention to language, punctuation, and sentence structure. This attention to

detail carried over into the editing phase, where I was able to find mistakes and make the

required changes to raise the standard of my work as a whole. I'm eager to keep improving these

abilities because, overall, my capabilities in critical analysis and attention to detail have been

quite helpful in this course. Finding my talents in analytical and writing skill sets was also the

least difficult part of this course. I discovered that I had a knack for condensing complicated

ideas into arguments that were easy to understand and that I could spot patterns and themes in

texts with ease. In addition, I found that my writing had a distinct voice and style that set me

apart from my contemporaries.

Shrestha6

I really believe that this course has helped me with the necessary skills to join the community of

academic writers. I was able to get a strong foundation in academic writing methods and

principles by completing the several exercises and tasks. I was specifically prepared for this

course by learning how to format and organize academic papers correctly. I gained knowledge

about how crucial it is to write compelling conclusions, coherent body paragraphs, and clear

openers. When I interact with the academic writing community, having this information will be

helpful since it will guarantee that my work adheres to the required norms and conventions. The

training also stressed how important it is to do research and use reliable references in my work. I

gained knowledge on how to correctly cite and reference sources as well as assess them for

dependability and relevancy. These abilities are essential for academic writing since they show

that I can participate in scholarly discussions and interact with current research. All things

considered, this course has given me the information and abilities I need to participate in the

academic writing community with assurance. I am ready to do critical analysis, participate in

academic debates, and provide excellent academic work. I believe that this course has provided

me with the necessary skills to join the community of academic writers. My acquisition of

critical thinking, analysis, and writing abilities will be beneficial to me in my future academic

and professional pursuits. I also gained knowledge on how to successfully provide and receive

feedback—a crucial ability for any writer. In general, I believe that this course has improved my

writing confidence and skill. In conclusion, ENGL 1301 has been a transformative journey for

me. Throughout the course, I've gained valuable insights into the world of academic writing and

honed my skills in areas such as organization, analysis, and critical thinking. The assignments

and feedback provided by my instructor have been instrumental in my growth as a writer. I feel

more confident in expressing my thoughts and ideas effectively, and I'm excited to continue
Shrestha7

developing my writing skills in the future. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this

course and for the knowledge and experiences it has provided. ENGL 1301 has truly been a

stepping stone towards my academic and personal growth. And concluding this reflection essay I

am really grateful toward our professor for making us learn in a fun way and being way too

patient and applying different tactics to help with out assignments.
