Amen.
TODAY'S
SCIENCE LESSON
Lesson objectives:
• define and classify matter;
• identify the main parts of periodic table
of elements and its characteristics; and
• identify the name and symbols of some
common elements.
• Classify the given elements as metal,
nonmetal or metalloid
MIXED UP!
• The following are jumbled words that will
test your knowledge about today's lesson.
• You are going to rearrange the letters to
form a meaningful word that is being
describe.
• Your responses must be written only in our
Google Jam board. Link will be posted in
our Google meet chat box. Do not answer
yet until you are told to do so.

MATTER FLOWCHART

• Can you name 10 examples of matter that you currently,
see?
• How can you tell what's the matter?
Examples of Matter

• Table
• Air
• Water
• A computer
• Paper
• Wood
• Sand
• Rock
• Clouds
• Fingernail

Any physical object consists of matter. It doesn't matter

whether it's an atom, element, compound, or mixture. It's
all matter.little bit of body text
How can you tell
what's the matter?

Not everything you encounter in the world is

matter. Matter can be converted into energy,
which has neither mass nor volume. So, light,
sound, and heat are not matter.

Seeing or hearing it isn't sufficient. Matter is

anything you can weigh, touch, taste, or smell.
THE PERIODIC TABLE
EXPLAINED
https://www.britannica.com/science/periodic-table
Dmitri Mendeleev
• Russian Scientist
• Invented the Periodic Table of
Elements
• Father of Periodic Table of Elements.
• Arranged elements by atomic mass.
• Predicted existence of several
unknown elements
Jons Jacob Berzelius
• Swedish Scientist
• Introduce the modern system of
chemical nomenclature
• Started the use of chemical symbols
and uses the initial letters of its
common or Latin name in its
capitalized form
Activity Time
Read the following instructrions:

• Open the Jamboard link in our Google meet

chat box. (

• Do not write or draw anything unless your
teacher told you to do so.
• To check if you learn something from the
video, the teacher will ask you several
questions about the table of elements.
• Listen attentively to your teacher's
instruction.
Activity Time
Read the following instructrions:
Encircle the following parts of the table of
elements:
• Element Period
• Element Group
• Metals
• Non-metals
• Metalloids (semi-metals)
• Noble gas
Periods and Groups in
the Periodic Table.

Element Periods
• The rows in the periodic table
are called periods.

Element Groups
• Groups are the columns of the
table.
3 Main Parts of the
Periodic Table
• Metal
• Non-metal
• Metalloids (Semi-
metal)
Metal
• typically found on the left side of the
periodic table.

CHARACTERISTICS OF METALS
• Good conductors of electricity
• Malleable(can be hammered)
• Shiny (LUSTER)
• Ductile ( can be drawn into wires)
• sometimes magnetic
• High melting points

Can you give some examples of metals found

in your table of elements?
Metals
• Elements that tend to "lose" electrons
and become positively charged.
• Metals tend to lose electrons and
form smaller sized ions that are
positively charged.
Non-metals
• found on the right side of periodic
table (to the right of the staircase)

CHARACTERISTICS OF METALS
• Nonconductors
• Brittle (break easily)
• dull (not shiny)
• not magnetic

Can you give some examples of non-metals

found in your table of elements?
Non-metals
• Tend to "gain" or "acquire" electrons
and become negatively charged.
Metalloids (Semi-
metals
• found on the right side of periodic
table (staircase-like)
CHARACTERISTICS OF METALS
• have some characteristics of metals
and some of non-metals
• have metallic appearance, but only
fair conductors of electricity.
• Brittle
• Semiconductors

Can you give some examples of metalloids found in

your table of elements?
Metalloids (Semi-metals)
• Elements that is more likely to have
no electrical charges at all.
Study the periodic table.
This tool is used by scientists to
determine quickly the properties of
elements. For example, the first
element found in the table is
hydrogen. It has a symbol
represented by capital letter H.
Letter or letter, like in He, which is
a symbol of Helium make up the
list of the different elements in the
table.
Observe the following symbol of elements
found in the Periodic Table of Elements

Hydrogen Lithium Sodium

H Li Na

What do you observe about writing a symbol of elements?

How to write symbols for element?
Two important rules should be followed when writing
the symbols of elements so that there is no confusion.

• The first letter of element's symbol is always a

capital letter.
Example: H (not n) for Hydrogen

2. If there are two letters in the element's symbol,

the second letter is always a small letter.
Example: Li (not LI) for Lithium
The International Union of Pure and Applied Science (IUPAC)
is an international organization of chemist that decides on the
naming of element. The names of the element have originate
from:

1. Name of their abundant source

2. Place where they discovered (geographical
names)
3. Name of the discoverer
4. Their Properties (colors)
5. Name of Celestial Bodies
6. Name of mythological figures
7. Name of mineral and ores
Question 2: 1. How are the symbols of the
elements having two-letter symbol written in the

Worksheet periodic table?

Answer 2:
Read the following questions and put your
response in the Jamboard.

Question 1: What is the symbol for Boron? Nitrogen? Question 3: What is the symbol for lithium?for
Fluorine? and Vanadium? chlorine? for argon? for calcium? and for manganese
