Course/Module description:
This course will survey the development of the Hebrew language from its earliest
attestations through the end of the Tannaitic period. The development of the
language will be studied through the reading of archaic biblical poems, classical
biblical texts, late biblical texts, epigraphic material from the First Temple period,
the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bar Kokhba letters, and selections from the Mishna.
Attention will be paid to salient linguistic phenomena of the different periods.
The first semester will be dedicated for texts from the First Temple period; the
second semester – for texts from the Second Temple period and beyond.

Course/Module aims:
1.Recognize the diversity of classical Hebrew in the periods in which it was spoken.

2. Understand the changes in classical Hebrew and its development.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be


able to:
Recognize different types of classical Hebrew by their linguistic features.
