Competencies

Objectives

• Identify the parts and functions of the circulatory system;


• Determine the pathway of blood through the heart and into the lungs
and back to heart again; and
• Identify technologies used to detect heart abnormalities.

Essential Concepts

• Circulatory system is one of the organ systems in the human body


which takes charge in the transport of oxygen and nutrients to the
organs and tissues throughout the body and carry waste products.
• It has three components: the heart, the blood, and the blood vessels.
• The heart is a hollow muscular organ, as big as a clinched fist located
right at the back of the breastbone between the lungs. It is divided
into four chambers: the right atrium, the right ventricle, the left
atrium, and the left ventricle.
• Blood consists of three kinds of cells: the red blood cell which carry
oygen, the white blood cell which fight diseases, and the platelets
which help in the clotting of blood. Plasma is a yellowish substance
consisting of water, salts, vitamins, minerals, hormones, dissolved
gases, and fats.

• There are three types of blood vessels: the arteries which carry blood
away from the heart, the veins which carry blood towards the heart,
and the capillaries.

Organizational Strategies

• Prepare the materials needed for every activity.


• Prepare the classroom for group activities.
• Organize students for small group discussions.

Specific Vocabulary

• Carbon Dioxide - compound with molecules consisting of one carbon


atom bound to two oxygen atoms.
• Cardiac Muscle - specialized muscle of the heart.
• Circulation - movement in a cycle; specifically, movement of blood
throughout the body.
• Left Atrium - The upper left chamber of the heart
• Left Ventricle - the lower left chamber of the heart.
• Lungs - the organ of the body where blood cells become enriched with
oxygen.
• Oxygen - element essential for respiration.
• Pump - a machine or device for raising, compressing or transferring
fluids.
• Right Atrium - the upper right chamber of the heart.
• Right Ventricle - thelower right chamber of the heart.
• Valve - a membranous structure in a hollow organ or passag, as in an
artery or vein that folds or closes to prevent the return flow of the
body fluid passing through it.
