Course Title: ME317 – Welding Metallurgy (2 units) (semester 1)

Objective: To introduce basic knowledge of welding metallurgy and give first

hand information on design and quality control on welded materials using
different types of welding processes.

Learning Outcome: The students will be able to carry out quality control
assessment on structural materials welded by different welding processes.

Mode of Delivery: 2 Hours Lecture + 1 Hour Tutorial (45 Hours per

semester).

Mode of Assessment: Coursework 40% + University Examination 60%.

Course Contents: Fundamentals of welding metallurgy: fusion and solid
state welding, strengthening of materials. Solidification processes: heat
sources, heatflow, metal transfer, reactions in the weld pool, formation and
solidification of welds, structure of weld beads. Properties and
characteristics of filler materials: Fluxes, alloying elements, wires,
electrodes, fumes, electrode baking. Weldability and properties of materials:
ferrous, non ferrous, plastics, welding of dissimilar materials, rebuilding,
overlay and surfacing, preand post heat treatment. Testing and quality
control of welded joints: Welding defects, NDT, Welders and welding
procedures qualification. Design for welding: Residual stresses and
distortion, field welding of pipelines, underwater welding.
