A Special Issue on:

“Advances in Nanomedicine in drug delivery and medical devices”

Call for papers:

Pharmaceutical nanotechnology often referred to as “Nanomedicine” has grown by leaps and bounds in
the past few years, poised to cross $160 Billion by 2015. There is a clear unmet need for targeted delivery
of the “right drugs” to the “right person” to the “right cells” at the “right dose”. With the advances in the
combinatorial chemistry for higher specificity and selectivity of drug action, there is a rapid rise in the
development of difficult-to-formulate-recalcitrant drug molecules. Most of the drugs are limited by their
poor solubility, high toxicity, high dosage, and aggregation due to poor solubility, nonspecific delivery, in
vivo degradation and short circulating half-lives. Nanotechnology in the recent years has played a crucial
role in keeping these wolves at bay, by enabling a specific delivery of the active at the specific site
thereby reducing the side effects and improving the efficacy. A definite boost to the field of nanomedicine
is the advent of advanced molecular level characterization tools. With pharmaceutical, medical device and
diagnostic companies looking to bolster their product pipeline and build patent assets, nanotechnology
will surely rule the roost in the years to come.

Even though, there are multiple journals covering wide aspects of nanotechnology in biomedicine, drug
delivery etc. there is still an untapped potential for a special issue like this, dealing with the novices in the
field. For this special issue, we are particularly interested, but are not limited to the following areas in
nanomedicine covering drug delivery/ medical devices/ diagnostics/ theranostics: Polymeric
nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, liposomes, micelles,
nanosuspenisons, nanocrystals, nanoemulsions, nanocapsules, nanospheres, nanovaccines, magnetic
nanoparticles, Iron oxide nanoparticles, dendrimers, Cyclodextrin nanoparticles, Nanosponges, nanogels,
hybrid nanoparticles like lipomers, polymerosomes, niosomes, inorganic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and
gold nanoparticles. We would also be interested in basic studies pertaining to interactions of nanoparticles
at a cellular level, nanotoxicology, nano-pharmacokinetics and bio-distribution studies, formulation
process development, drug polymer interactions in nanoparticles, mechanisms for formation of
nanoparticles, advanced characterization tools, scale up and validation of formulation process of
nanopharmaceuticals, exploring a novel route for drug delivery with the nanopharmaceuticals, studies
pertaining to effect of formulation variables and components on the properties of nanoparticles, studies on
targeting, and Imaging, simulations and mathematical models dealing with drug release, and/or device
design.

We invite investigators to contribute original research as well as review articles on the above mentioned
subjects. Short communications/letters to the editor would be entertained only if it is of a breakthrough
nature, and has immediate clinical/pharmaceutical relevance.
Intention to submit an article:

Please notify the guest Editor at sswamin4@uthsc.edu about your kind intention for submitting an article
with the type (original research article, review, short communications, and letters to the Editor), title and
a brief abstract (not more than 150 words) and approximate content with “SI-Nanomedicine” as the
subject line no later than October 31st, 2012.

Manuscripts submission:

After receiving the confirmation from the guest Editor, manuscripts must be prepared according to the
Journal’s guidelines, available at http://aspbs.com/nnl. Submit your manuscript in pdf format through
only NNL submission portal http://mstracker.com/submit1.php?jc=nnl. Please mention “SI-
Nanomedicine” in cover letter and at the beginning of the title of the paper for identifying the paper for
this particular issue. All submissions to this special issue will be subjected to a strict peer review process
to ensure high quality. Please indicate five potential reviewers with their names and email addresses in
your cover letter. Also make sure that the submitted paper has not been published elsewhere and is not
currently submitted for review to any other journal and will not be submitted elsewhere before a final
decision is made by this journal. This should also be confirmed in the cover letter. The deadline for the
submission of manuscript is Dec 31st, 2012. The authors will be notified by 28 Feb, 2013 or earlier.
