Summary of Dr. Raqib Chowdhuri lecture, Monash University

Topical Suggestions: Exploring Key Issues in Linguistics and ELT

This is the last series of teaching by Mr. Raqib as an additional class to Key Issues and English
Language Teaching course. This time, Mr. Raqib explain to us about the differences between a teacher
and a content specialist which according to him a teacher should not only be a content specialist but
also he/she should has the ability transfer the knowledge to the students. It means that as a teacher, we
should know how to translate both our content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge into practice
that lead to effective classroom practice and achieving the learning goals. Beside that, being a teacher
also means that you always have to make a preparations before teaching and do reflections after that. It
is really important to do since it'll make you ready and always improve your knowledge either in
content or pedagogical knowledge.
The other differences that also mentioned is the focus or goal achieving as a content specialist
and a teacher is a bit different. In general, there's two types of assessments that usually use that are
assessment of learning and assessment for learning. Assessment of learning is the sumative one which
means that it use test to grade student's achievements in learning. So, students are not pay attention to
other things rather than how to not failed in the test which mostly found in Indonesia's formal
education system. While in Assessment for learning is the formative one which stands for ungraded or
undocumented knowledge achievement. In this type of assessment, it focus more on the knowledge of
the students whether students understand about the materials or not. So, students have free will and not
afraid to ask if they don't understand that lead to deeper understanding of materials. So, as a teacher we
should give more of our attention to not only sumative but also formative assessment related to make
students success in learning.
In encouraging students success in learning, we should consider the Vygotsky theory about
Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). ZPD translated as when we give students high challenges and
also high support in their learning process. So, students are expected to have Higher Order of Thinking
Skills (HOTS) and teacher roles here is being a facilitator. It means that we give students necessary
scaffolding to help them in learning, other than that they could looking for themselves which leads to a
strong foundation in construction of their knowledge. By giving scaffolding here, doesn't mean that
we're easing down, it just like a little guidance so students have a big picture on how doing a project or
finish their tasks. In conclusion, as a teacher many aspects should be a consideration to make students
success in learning that are mastering the both content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge,
implement a suitable assessment to measure students understanding and also give them high challenges
and high supports so students can learn better.
