The Need: SOC For Smart Cities

Urbanization is global phenomenon. According to UN, it’s predicted by 2050, urban population will count
68%. India is not behind, and government has launched Smart Cities Mission in 2015 as an innovative
and visionary undertaking towards improving the quality of life and driving economic growth by
enabling local development through digital transformation to create smart outcomes for citizens.
Digital technology is core of this mission, but it brings its own set of challenges – i.e., increased cyber
threats and the risk of privacy violation. To make the cities secure, a robust cyber Security Operation
Centre (SOC) is the need of hour.

The cost of Cyber Security Failure

According to recent survey by IBM the cost of security failure is more than enough to strain any city’s
budget. Unsecure devices, gateways and networks are fertile ground for hackers interested in causing
city-wide disruption and possible system control.
An Intelligent SOC is the solution here. SOC Team with addition of big data tools, quantitative analytics
and machine learning enables to identify not only threats, but also a broader range of key business risks.

Security Operation Centre Strategy

What It does:
➢ Defines a comprehensive security operations
center procedure through change management,
incident management, etc.
➢ Conducts administration & continuous health
monitoring of platform with regular and timely
updates of all firmware and operating systems to
mitigate any security vulnerabilities.
➢ Implements and operates security operations
center (SOC) with advanced analytical capabilities
and integrated with all the systems and edge
devices, wherever possible. Operates the SOC on
a 24x7 real time security monitoring basis,
identifies and responds to security incidents.
➢ Conducts business continuity plan in case of
disaster recovery for smart services

Conclusion:
Smart Cities will grow bigger in near future, but the important question will be the cyber safety. With
growing threats, smart cities can be vulnerable to many cyber-attacks that will have critical impact on the
entire ecosystem including the residents. An effective SOC, will cater to cybersecurity needs, protect and
build trusted environment across the value chain.
