F/21/14 MAT 172-Ch 5: Weather Application This activity will show howa trigonometric graph can be used in a real-world application. You will sneed Internet access to complete this activity. You will also need a basic knowledge of trigonometric ‘graphs. (Refer back to 5.2 of your notebook if you need help) I. Find Real Datato Model 1. Go nliue whe Weather Underground webpage - worw.wunderground.2om 2. Click on More atthe top ofthe webpage and select Historical Weather, ‘Type inthe Mocksville zip code 27028) under Location and seleet Mocksvile, NC. Change the date to January 1, 2017 and click Submit. ‘We will look at monthly maximum temperature averages instead of daily. Click oa the ‘Monthly tab to see the monthly averages. “6. ‘We will be using the Average Max Temperature for each month which is showin below. Use the attached grid to sketch a graph of the recorded data, 9. Label the x-axis wit the corresponding Data Value foreach month as shown inthe table, (Note that it will start at Oand end at 23). 10, Label the y-axis in increments of 5 stating at O and ending at 90. This will represent the temperature in °F. 11, Sketch the plot for each data value (Data Value, Avg Temp). Most points you will have to estimate the position on the graph, but you should be able to get pretty close. Do NOT connect the dots. Fit, we wl acute the ampiitide(orheigh ofthe graph. The formula to calculate this is: maximum y_value - minimum y_valuel. From the table of data, state the following: max. y-value=_4@ min. y-value=_55_ [Now ealeulate A (amplitude) awl 4, Draw a fine on your graph showing the amplitude. To do this you will take your max ‘yevalue and subtract off the amplitude or you can take your min. y-value and add the amplitude, This value is also the vertical translation, how much your graph i shifted up cr down from the origin (or the D value in the general equation). Draw a horizontal line through this value and across your curve. State the value below. p= 12 sin(B(x—C))+ D using estimates 5. Now we will find the Period of the function. By the graph, we know that our graph represent two cles because tis showing wo yar. The period ofthe graph woul be fone cycle or one year, which is__| months. To find the Phase Shift ofthe Function, draw a vertical line through the x-value 2 in order to match the true shape of the curve. ‘The two lines will cross atthe new origin for Yyour graph cresting a nice sine curve that starts atthe new intersection and goes up and. down the height ofthe amplitude. This line wil also help you calculate the phase shift. ‘State the number of units thatthe original curve must shift o get o this new point on the vertical line. You must also know ifit shifts right or left in order to know how to ‘write it in the general equation. coe 7.
