developing bodies
need growing and
developing care.
Kids’ bodies are constantly growing and changing. Which means that
everything from complex surgeries to simple procedures can have huge
implications for their development. Knowing how a baby’s lungs, a child’s
bones or a teenager’s mind needs to grow completely changes the care we
give them. That’s why when we treat kids, we do it with their developing
bodies in mind. So that when the kids in our care grow up to be adults,
they can be just as healthy as the day they walked out our doors.

It’s easy to chase adventure in
Colorado—until you’re stuck in the
maze of modern health care.
A
s I found myself skidding face-first down
a blue run this past March, I was thinking
more about injuries to my pride than to my
body. But days after my shame from show-
boating—and then crossing my skis—had
faded, I still couldn’t move my left arm. My
sports medicine doctor believed I had ripped the supra-
spinatus muscle in my rotator cuff and wanted an MRI
done to confirm her diagnosis—the sooner, the better.
If I needed surgery, the outcome would be greatly im-
proved if we moved quickly.
I scheduled an MRI for the following week, but
the day before, the provider called to tell me the ap-
pointment had been canceled because my insurance
company had deemed it unnecessary; it wanted a less-
expensive X-ray first. I called to arrange the X-ray and
was told it would be easier if I came during walk-in
hours. I missed work to do so, only to be informed
that walk-in hours had been suspended. Would I care
to schedule an appointment? When I finally got the
X-ray, it was (surprise) inconclusive. So I got the MRI
two weeks later and the results two weeks after that:

doc thought physical therapy would repair it. Un-

Kitchen Confidential
Which room in your house is the germiest? You might guess the bathroom, but it’s actually—drumroll!—the kitchen,
according to NSF International. The public health and safety organization found in a small 2011 study that
coliforms are most prevalent there. “More than 20 percent of foodborne illness outbreaks result from food that was
consumed inside the home,” says Lisa Yakas, NSF’s senior project manager of consumer products. To avoid that,
you need to go beyond cleaning and actually sanitize the dirtiest areas of your kitchen. Here’s how.

fter 40-some years of work (and making small talk with co-workers), you could be excused for wanting to retreat from
civilization and spend the rest of your days in a Howard Hughes–ian cocoon of seclusion. But social isolation doesn’t just
lead to depression and poor health, says Deana Davalos, a cognitive neuroscience professor in the psychology department
at Colorado State University; it also impairs brain function. That’s why, in 2015, Davalos and her colleagues at CSU
started their own adaptation of the B Sharp Program, which gifts patients with dementia-related disorders and their pri-
mary caregivers tickets to a season of the Fort Collins Symphony’s Masterworks concerts. Yes, the researchers hoped the
patients would enjoy the music, but they really wanted to understand how interacting with larger groups affected people.
“With dementia, we expect it to get worse,” Davalos says. “Stabilization is what we were really hoping for. We got changes in most
patients—they not only stabilized, but they improved.” Hopefully, memory loss, increased confusion, and faltering concentration
aren’t problems you’re dealing with at the moment. Nevertheless, Davalos says social interaction stimulates anyone’s mind and is
integral to maintaining brain health as we age. At the same time, you don’t want to spend your days hanging out with folks you
don’t like, so we put together this guide to finding your new BFFs.

Introducing 5280’s first-annual comprehensive list of premier retirement homes in Colorado. To compile the list,
we worked with Data Joe, a national quantitative research firm that conducted local research and verified every
listing. This list of 100 communities are the best out of 540+ in the Denver Metro Area and were evaluated on
availability, federal government ratings, frequency of negative reports, and community perception.
