Experiences in WWI caused relationships to become fractured and negatively intensified

between Europeans and colonized peoples as a result of the Great War. During the Age of
Imperialism (mid 18th century), European countries scramble for unclaimed land in parts of
Asia and Africa to form colonies. By using the colonies, countries could not only profit from raw
materials/natural resources, but the native people could be used later on to help fight in the
military. These colonies would play a key role in the future. In 1914, the Great War (WWI)
breaks out And Britain needs of the people, support, and military they have. they began to look
into the colonial people to fight against the enemy nations. As the war went on, colonized
people begin to question why they were in the war, how they are being treated, and they quickly
realize that the colonizing power wasn’t as strong as I thought they were to be.

World War I fractured the relationship between Europeans and colonial powers as they
removed the colonized people from their lands to help fight in the war. According to documents
1 and 5, Britain began to recruit colonized people from Africa. Recruited soldiers began to
question why they were fighting in a conflict that they had nothing to deal with. Africans saw that
were to die for a cause that is not one of their own. Questions also arose including why the only
time they were needed, or seemed useful, was when Britain needed them for their own benefit.
This lead to a revolt in Egypt, ultimately gaining independence from Britain.
Therefore the relationship between the colonized people in Africa worsened due to the
continued use of Africans as recruited soldiers in World War I, against their will. The purpose of
document 1 is to show the world of the letter had been published, the way the British forced the
colonized people to fight for their life in a foreign conflict. The author also explains how the only
time they seemed like they had a purpose was when they needed them was when they were in
trouble. To sum it up, the British government used the colonized soldiers for their involvement in
the war. The purpose of document 5 is to show how the colonized people living in Egypt were
treated and how they were forced to fight against their will. They also note how the war has
fractured their relationships with them wanting to gain independence from britain. They begin to
see how the british are and at them for wanting to become independent, not biting all the other
things the colonized soldiers did for Britain. In 1884, European countries met in Berlin to discuss
the partitioning of lands in Africa that would be colonized. When a nation colonized it is likely
that the government wants to become more powerful, wealthy, and to gain more resources. To
achieve this goal, these nations would have territories all around the world that would get
natural resources. Britain specifically colonized India for its ability to grow cotton well.
Colonization was one of the main ways a country could gain small control around the world.
When in times of need, colonizing nations would use what they have including colonial troops to
fight in the military. When soldiers were forced to fight them became angry, later leading to
decolonization which will fracture the relationships.

Once World War I had begun, relationships between the Europeans and the colonized
peoples began to become worse as the colonized soldiers were treated terribly while fighting in
another conflict that doesn’t pertain to them. According to documents 4 and 6, British recruited
colonized soldiers were treated with disrespect and terrible conditions as they were forced to
fight in the war. Some colonized people believed it was discrimination towards their ethnicity
irthers just saw it out of disrespect. Soldiers were given inhabitable lands and unwanted living
conditions. Not only were the soldiers forced to serve time in the war, but they were also treated
terribly. Therefore with these conditions, relationships between the Europeans and the
colonized peoples began to worsen as they were treated with hatred and without care while
being forced to serve in a conflict that doesn't apply to them. The purpose of document 4 is to
show the author's family how the soldiers were treated once they arrived to the battle scene.
The authors explain how they were discriminated for being indian. The author compares their
living conditions to a prisoner in Germany. The author is in disbelief to how they were treated
after being forced to join the army against their will. The purpose of document 6 is to petition to
the British colonial government to defend the rights of the jamaican war veterans. The author,
Hubert Reid states how they had to fight for the little land they had and ill treatment. The author
describes the land as unlivable and was a concern. This documents shows the people taking
actions towards showing how the people were treated. Before then, most colonized people were
scared to confront the government. The sepoy mutiny was known as the first major threat that
opposed the british crown. The sepoys were indian soldiers that fought in the British east india
company. The revolt was caused by feelings that their culture was being limited, attacked, and
controlled by the british policies. This occurred in 1857 showing that the british government and
indian colonial civilians have had long stressful tensions going in between them. This hatred
towards the colonial peoples will eventually result in decolonization after world wars.

After World War I, the relationship between the Europeans and the colonized soldiers
grew closer as the war that the soldiers were brought into, gave new experiences and
leadership that they hadn’t been introduced to. According to documents 3 and 7, when African
people were brought into European conflicts, they learned how to be proud of who they were,
gained war experiences, gained respect that they hadn’t been given before the war. Therefore,
with the experience of war, better relationships between the colonized Africans and the
Europeans as it gave them positive traits and good experiences that they can learn from.
However, this statement wasn’t the same for the majority of the people fighting in the war.Only
the minority of colonized soldiers fighting in the war learned and gained war experiences and
leadership. The majority of soldiers saw war as death and not a pleasurable experience.
The purpose of document 3 is to show how the Africans has to fight in a foreign conflict taking
place in France. The document shows how the colonial troops came to fight against the
Germans who had called them savages, but now they are able to fight back and call the
germans savages. However this document only shows a small glimpse of colonial troops getting
along with civilians, however most of the time they were discriminated against when they were
forced to fight in foreign wars. The purpose of document 7 is to inform the public of how the war
gave them new and beneficial war experiences. The author talks about ge gained respect that
he would not have otherwise obtained if he didn’t go to war. However the majority of colonial
troops faced a hard time during war while being discriminated and taken away from their
families back home.

After World War I, the relationships between the colonized people and the European
countries (who colonized them) became fractured as they made the recruited colonized peoples
questions why they were fighting in a foreign conflict that did not pertain to them. Along with this
questioning came to show that the colonizing nations wasn’t as strong as they said to be when
colonizing the people as they lost battles during the war. The only time the Europeans made the
colonized people feel as if they had any value was during times of war, when the Europeans
needed them fight. This made the people realize why they were under control of them and
eventually would fight for their own independence to be free of a nation. For example, Egypt
was unhappy with how the British used them so they fought and gained independence in 1922.
During the war, soldiers who were recruited faces terrible conditions that lacked cultivation
areas and gave little to no sleep for the working soldiers. Although some soldiers were able to
gain war experiences, respect, and new insights in life, they were were used and only brought to
the war fronts to help fight for their colonizing nations.
