1 DESCRIPTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The PT320BC is one of the smallest batching controllers in the world.
Using an up to-date delta-sigma A/D converter to achieve a higher speed and higher accuracy for
batching or packing systems. It has built in RS232 as standard or RS485 can be factory preset set as a
standard feature. Multi-drop or long distance communication is possible by using RS485. Sophisticated
software has provided for different batching system applications. The PT320BC is suitable for batching
a single recipe of up to 4 materials into a single weigh hopper.

1.2 DEFINITIONS
Automatic fine setpoint correction:
Fine setpoint(new) = fine setpoint(old) - [(final setpoint–result material net value) /2]
The correction is performed at the end of each batch process. The fine setpoint
value in memory is updated after all materials are batched, and the revised fine setpoint will be used in
the next batch sequence. No correction is made if fine setpoint(new) is negative.
Fine setpoint (new) is set to “coarse – 1” if fine setpoint (new) is equal to or greater
than the coarse setpoint. Fine setpoint(new) will be set to 999 if fine setpoint(new) is greater than 999.

Dead weight:
Dead weight is the self weight of the platform or scale load carrying structure on the load cells without
the contents or items to be weighed. The output voltage of the load cell in response to the weight of the
platform is usually the zero offset.

Division:
The ratio of step width to multiplier. The value of the division can only be one of the following: 1, 2, 5.
The external count increments by the division.

Excitation voltage:
The voltage that is supplied by the indicator to the load cell.

Final setpoint:
The target weight of the material to be batched.

Free fall setpoint:

When the reading of the PT320BC is greater than or equal to the final setpoint value less the free fall
setpoint value, the fine relay contact will turn off.

Free fall value:

The average increase in reading after the coarse and fine relay contact is turned off due to the free fall
of work in process material.

Live weight:
The weight that is applied to the scale and shown on the indicator.

Load cell:
Load cell is a device that converts force to electronic voltage. A load cell consists of two parts. The first
part is a sensor that can be linearly distorted according to the force applied to it. The second part is the
strain gauge element which changes its resistance according to the distortion of the sensor.

Load cell rated output:

The output voltage from the load cell divided by the excitation voltage at load cell rated capacity. This is
usually expressed in mV/V.

Maximum capacity:
The maximum figure, ignoring decimal point, that the indicator will be calibrated to display.
PT320BC instruction manual 2

Multiplier:
The multiplier determines the position of the decimal point or the number of tailing zeros added to the
internal count or reading.

For example:
If the internal reading is 234,
Multiplier Display on indicator
10 2340
1 234
.1 23.4
.01 2.34
.001 .234
.0001 .0234

Preliminary setpoint:
When the reading of the PT320BC is greater than or equal to the final setpoint value
less the preliminary setpoint value, the coarse output contact will be turned off.

Resolution:
The ratio of the maximum capacity to step width. This is usually expressed in divisions or counts.

Span:
The change of reading from the indicator in response to the change of standard
weight applied. Full span is the change when full load or maximum capacity is applied.

Step width:
The difference between two consecutive readings of the scale. Equal to the division times the multiplier.

TDC:
Time delay for discharge control. During the discharge process, the discharge control will be
deactivated 0.1 to 9.9 seconds after the gross weight has reduced to be within the zero band. Setting
range is 01to 99 (i.e. 0.1 seconds to 9.9 seconds).

TTC:
Time delay for tolerance check. During the batching process, tolerance will be checked with 0.1 to 9.9
seconds delay after the fine control is turned off. Setting range is 01 to 99 (i.e. 0.1 seconds to 9.9
seconds).

PT320BC instruction manual 7

3 INSTALLATION
3.1 GENERAL RULES
Do not install the PT320BC in direct sunshine, and avoid sudden temperature changes, vibration or wind.
The best environment is when the temperature is about 20C or 68ºF and the relative humidity is about
50%.
Ground the PT320BC via the power cable to the rear terminal and ensure a good ground connection. Do
not ground directly to other equipment.
Analogue input/output signals are sensitive to electrical noise. Do not bind these cables together as it
could result in cross-talk interference. Please also keep them well away from AC power cables, and keep
all cables as short as possible.
If the local AC electrical supply fluctuates by more than ±10% an AC regulator must be used in order to
stabilize the power and reduce power spikes.

3.2 INPUT SENSITIVITY OF LOAD CELLS

The input sensitivity (A) of the load cells can be calculated from the following formula:

A = (Live weight of the scale)/(Number of load cells)/(Load cell capacity)*(Load cell mV/V at capacity)
*(Excitation voltage)*(1000 for microvolts)/(Scale resolution in divisions)

Alternatively
A = (Load cell output voltage at scale capacity - load cell output voltage at dead load) × Step width /
Scale capacity

The PT320BC requires that “A” must be greater than or equal to 0.5μV/D.
Note: The maximum input voltage is 20mV. Load cells should be installed with some reserve capacity for
unexpected loading. The excitation is 10V meaning that for 3mV/V load cells the full capacity signal is 30
mV. In order not to exceed the maximum input voltage of 20 mV the load cell capacity would therefore
need to be 1.5 times the maximum operational load (dead weight + live weight). This provides a
satisfactory safety margin also.

3.3 CONNECTING THE LOAD CELL TO THE INDICATOR

The analogue output from the Load cell and the RS232/RS485 input/output signals are sensitive to
electrical noise. Do not bind these cables together as it could result in cross-talk interference. Please also
keep them well away from the AC power cables.

In all circumstances, the buffer relays should be DC Operated and make sure that
the contact rating of buffer relays is adequate to drive the corresponding starter or
power controlling device. Diode suppressors should be connected in parallel with the
coil of every DC operated buffer relay.
If AC operated relays are needed, RC suppressors should be connected in parallel with the
relay coil. It also applies to those controlling devices that are inductive in nature. (E.G.
solenoid valves).

3.7 GENERAL NOTES

● If there has been a disruption to the power supply or disconnection the power cable, the indicator will
flag that there has been a power interruption with the display “888888”, if this display occurs at any
other time you should regard it as a warning that volatile memory (weighing event data) will have
been lost. Please allow a warm-up period to achieve thermal stability in the load cell and indicator.
Zero will drift initially. To sustain thermal stability you should keep the indicator on.
● Set and calibrate the indicator as described in the function setting, the setpoint setting and calibration
section.
● When the production start button as shown in connection for control output and input is pressed and
then released, production is immediately started and materials are batched one by one based on the
setpoints entered (i.e. from M1, M2, M3, M4).
● The display will blank and show oL when the input signal exceeds the maximum capacity by more
than 9 step widths. The display will also show the same indication is no load cell is connected or the
input voltage is too far below zero.

3.7.1 Errors at power on

The PT320BC will display LoSt if there is an error encountered during the diagnostic function at power
on. For any LoSt message other than below, return the unit to the manufacturer.
● LoSt Func :Function settings are lost or corrupted, check and set functions.
● LoSt cAL :Calibration settings are lost or corrupted, check and re-calibrate.
● LoSt Set :Setpoint settings are lost or corrupted, check and re-set.

4.2.33 Auto tare condition

While atc is shown in the lower display set the condition for auto tare with “0” or “1” shown in the upper
display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. If Atc = “0” tare is executed
regardless of the value, Atc = “1” tare is carried out if the gross weight is within the zero range.

4.2.34 Tare delay time

While tdt is shown in the lower display select the desired tare delay time from “0.0” to “9.9” shown in the
upper display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. This is in seconds. This
delay will ensure the weight is stable during taring of the scale and should be set if ATE is enabled. The TDT
parameter will be invalid if no tare is accepted.

4.2.35 Tare check counter

While tcc is shown in the lower display set the number of averages used for automatic tare with “1” to “99”
shown in the upper display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. 1 = no
averages (instantaneous value), 2~99 = number of samples averaged for the tare check operation. This
averaging is only effective during a batching procedure, in normal weighing mode, pressing the “TARE” key
or receiving a “TARE” command from the RS232/RS485 interface, the tare value will not be averaged.

4.2.36 Fine control delay

While Fcd is shown in the lower display set the fine control delay with “0” to “100” shown in the upper display
with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit.
0 = No delay, coarse and fine output are turned on simultaneously.
1~99 = Fine output is turned on after coarse output is turned on at the condition
net value >= (final value – coarse value) ×FCD / 100.
100 = Fine output is turned on when coarse output is completed.

4.2.37 Fine delay time

While Fdt is shown in the lower display select the desired fine delay time from “0.0” to “9.9” shown in the
upper display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. This is in seconds.

(1) When the coarse output is turned on and the fine control delay time has passed, the fine output will be
turned on after delay a period of time(FDT). This parameter is not effective during a re-batch process.

The dribble control will be activated after the coarse feed is turned off.
The dribble control will be activated when the net value is within final value less coarse value and tolerance
range. The dribble control will be deactivated at re-batch.

4.2.40 Comparison check counter

While ccc is shown in the lower display set the number of averages used for setpoint comparison with “1” to
“99” shown in the upper display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit.
1 = no averages (instantaneous value), 2~99 = number of samples averaged for setpoint comparison.
The net value will be averaged when the net value is >= (coarse value / coarse comparison), then this
averaged value is compared with the “coarse / fine” value .
The coarse/fine output will be turned off when the average net value is >= to the “coarse / fine” value.
Note: This parameter will be invalid during the comparison inhibit time.

4.2.41 Freefall compensation range

While FFr is shown in the lower display select the desired freefall compensation range from “0” to “999”
shown in the upper display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit.
0 = Free fall compensation will be carried out automatically regardless the net value
1~999 = Free fall compensation will be carried out automatically if the value is within the free fall
compensation range.
If the absolute value of the “Final” less net value is within the free fall compensation
range, the fine setpoint compensation will be carried out automatically. When the fine control is deactivated,
the net compensation will be carried out. When EFF (enable free fall compensation) is equal to 1~xx, it
means free fall compensation will be carried out every 1 or xx batching sequences, as set.

4.2.42 Delay hold time

While dHt is shown in the lower display select the desired delay hold time from “0.0” to “9.9” shown in the
upper display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. This is in seconds. 0.0 =
no hold time, 0.1~9.9 is the net weight hold time.

4.2.43 Material re-batch

While rEb is shown in the lower display disable or enable re-batch with “0” or “1” shown in the upper display
with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. If rEb = “0” rebatch is disabled, rEb =
“1” enables re-batch.

4.2.44 ID code
While Id.no is shown in the lower display select the desired ID number “00” to “99” shown in the upper
display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. This is the RS485 unit address
code. If Id.no = 00 unit addresses are disabled (an address is not used, as for RS232).

4.2.45 Batch production control

While cnt.En is shown in the lower display enable multiple batch production by using the TARE key to select
"1" or “0” to disable multiple batch production and the MODE key to continue. When cnt.En=1 an additional
parameter (b.no) will be enabled in the set point setting menu to select the number of times the batch will be
automatically dispensed each time the batching is commenced with START. For example, if you have a batch
final weight set for 1500kg, cnt.En=1 and b.no=4, when you press the start button 6t (4x1500) will be
batched. This is convenient for instance if you want to batch 6m 3 of concrete using a 1.5m3 batching plant.

4.2.46 Batch start method

While inPUt is shown in the lower display select the desired batch start method as shown in the upper
display with the TARE key, press MODE to continue, ENTER to save and exit. The selections possible are;
Select “ST”:
• Short circuiting the rear terminals ‘START’ and ‘COM’ of the PT320BC will start production.
• Transmitting the the command ‘ST’ through the serial communications port will start production.

Select “ST.HOLD”:
• Short circuiting the rear terminals ‘START’ and ‘COM’ of the PT320BC will start production. If during
production the rear terminals ‘START’ and ‘COM’ are short circuited again production will be paused
(material feeds closed) and when the rear terminals ‘START’ and ‘COM’ are again open circuited
production will resume.

Select“ST-DIS” :
• Short circuiting then opening the rear terminals ‘START’ and ‘COM’ of the PT320BC will start
production. If the ‘START’ and ‘COM’ terminals are again short circuited only discharge of the batch
will be prevented. When the ‘START’ and ‘COM’ terminals are subsequently opened, the batch will be
discharged. This is very convenient to pre-batch while waiting for a truck to arrive.

4.2.47 Return to normal weighing

Press ENTER to return to normal weighing.
Note: When maximum capacity, division or multiplier is changed, the system must perform calibration again.
The gross display of the PT320BC will show “CAL” and wait for a calibration command. After calibration is
performed, set setpoint function setting is required. The gross display will show “ SEt” and wait for setting
commands.

4.3 FUNCTION SETTING USING RS232/RS485

Function setting can be conveniently performed by using RS232/RS485 during normal weighing mode.
Refer to the section on RS232/RS485 for connection diagrams.
From the RS232 port, input a command “FUNC<CR><LF>”, the display will show “FUNC” throughout
the function setting mode.
From the RS485 port, input a command “<ENQ>IDXX<CR><LF>”, the indicator responds
“<ACK>XX<CR><LF>”, then input the command “FUNC<CR><LF>”, the gross display will show
“FUNC”. XX is the indicator ID set in function settings above.
The sequence of function setting via serial port involves sending a series of parameters followed by
<CR><LF> and receiving a subsequent response from the PT320BC. If an invalid parameter is sent
the PT320BC responds NO? <CR><LF> and a correct entry must be made or N<CR><LF> sent to
move to the next setting. When the correct parameter has been sent, sending N<CR><LF> moves to
the next function. Sending R<CR><LF> returns to normal weighing mode. Note that commands are
case sensitive.

5 CALIBRATION
5.1 Notes
5.1.1 General
● Calibration should be carried out at initial installation or when any parts of the complete weighing
system are changed, or if any drift is noted.
● Zero tracking can not be performed during calibration.
● When an error occurs, the error message will output from the RS232/RS485 port if fitted.

5.1.2 Notes during span setting

● Span setting when step width and multiplier are not set to 1. When entering the value of the known
calibration load it is necessary to enter this value with the same increments as set for the PT320BC
display of weight. For accurate calibration the known weight should then be able to be divided by the
indicator step without any remainder. This includes steps of 10, 20 and 50.
● When the multiplier is set to × 10, no right most digit can be set.
● When the multiplier, maximum capacity or step width is changed or check sum error occurs, the CAL
mode may not be able to be exited by pressing the MODE key (calibration data must be reset).
● The PT320BC will not accept a calibration setting with the motion annunciator lit as the weight value
is uncertain. If calibration is required in unstable conditions the motion detection function settings
should be made larger until the motion annunciator is no longer lit. These function settings can be
changed back to another preferred value after calibration without having to re-calibrate.

5.2 KEYPAD CALIBRATION

5.2.1 Entering the calibration mode:
● Press and hold the ENTER key, then press the TARE key, 2 seconds later, “CAL” displays.
● The PT320BC then enters the zero calibration stage and displays zEro

5.2.2 Zero calibration

● If the current zero setting is acceptable it is not necessary to re-calibrate the zero offset, press the
TARE key to skip the zero calibration procedure, and enter the span calibration stage.
● If a new zero offset is to be calibrated press the MODE key to accept the current load as 0.

5.2.3 Span calibration

● Once zero calibration is complete without error the span calibration stage is reached and the
PT320BC then displays SPAn. Press the ENTER key if only zero calibration is required and the span
calibration stage is to be skipped.
● If a new span calibration is to be set, put the known calibration weight on to the weighing platform,
use the ZERO key to move the decimal point to the digit to be set and the TARE key to set the digit
so that the reading of the indicator is the same as the value of the standard weight, press the MODE
key to perform the calibration.
● Take care to note the position of the decimal point and the division prior to entering calibration mode
as the value entered during span calibration should be in the same format as that set for display
during function setup. i.e. if the scale has been set to show “100.00” at maximum capacity and the
division is 5 then a known calibration load of 76.05 would be entered as 7605. The decimal point
does not show as it is used to indicate the digit being set.

Note: The minimum calibration load required is 100 times the step width.

5.2.4 Error codes during calibration

● ERROR 1 : Incorrect setting for multiplier, division, or maximum capacity.
● ERROR 2 : Incorrect wiring between load cell and indicator, voltage for zero value is greater than the

5.3 CALIBRATION USING RS232/RS485

● Calibration setting can be conveniently performed by using RS232/RS485 during normal weighing
mode. Refer to the section on RS232/RS485 for connection diagrams.
● From the RS232 port, input a command “CAL<CR><LF>”, the display will show “CAL” throughout the
calibration setting mode.
● From the RS485 port, input a command “<ENQ>IDXX<CR><LF>”, indicator responds
“<ACK>XX<CR><LF>”, then input a command “CAL<CR><LF>”, the display will show “CAL” . XX is
the indicator ID set in function settings above.
● The sequence of calibration setting via serial port involves sending a series of parameters followed
by <CR><LF> and receiving a subsequent response from the PT320BC. If an invalid parameter is
sent the PT320BC responds NO? <CR><LF> and a correct entry must be made. When the correct
parameter has been sent the PT320BC moves to the next stage.

Note that commands are case sensitive.

5.3.1 Enter serial calibration setting mode

7 THE BATCHING OPERATION

● Start The weighing hopper is empty, the display shows “0”, and all gates are closed.
When the start button is pressed, the START input terminal is shorted to the COM input terminal.
Material 1, coarse and fine outputs go on depending upon setup. If the relays are connected as
shown above the supplying bin gates will be opened using the coarse and fine output signals.
● When the display reaches coarse setpoint, the coarse output signal will turn off. The coarse flow gate
will be closed by using the coarse output signal.
● When the display reaches fine setpoint, the fine output signal will turn off. The gate will be closed by
using the fine output signal.
● After a time delay for tolerance check (TTC), tolerance will be checked by the PT320BC.
If net weight of the batch batches is out of the tolerance range (i.e. 0.1~9.9%), then the output of out
of tolerance will be activated for 0.5sec.
● The above process will be repeat for material 2,3,4 and one by one .
● Data output is sent (auto or continuous mode:RS232/RS485).
● Discharge output will be activated until gross weight is less than the zero band and time delay for
discharge control (TDC) is over.
● The PT320BC is ready for next batching event.
● If an abort signal is received anytime after the start is received, then the coarse and fine signals go
off, gates will be closed.
● During a normal batching event, do not press the “TARE”.
● Note:
○ A batching abort signal can be sent by RS232/RS485 input or activated by pressing the MODE,
TARE and ZERO keys simultaneously.
○ A discharge abort signal can be activated by pressing and holding the ENTER key for 1sec.

Please note that the idea if free fall is based up on the concept of solids falling (After the flow has been
reduced to zero) from a supply bin into a weighing hopper. When liquids are being added to a weighing
hopper, wave propagation must be kept to a minimum to avoid load oscillation. If a submerged filling plan is
employed (which may have zero free fall) liquid displacement must be taken into consideration.
