Transportation Method Definition

The Transportation Method of linear programming is applied to the problems

related to the study of the efficient transportation routes. It concerned with minimizing the

costs involved in supplying requirements to several locations from several sources with

different costs related to the various combinations of source and requirement locations.

The method was actually developed in 1941 by F.L. Hitchcock and therefore preceded

the simplex method by half a dozen years. Still, it can be viewed as a streamlined version

of the simplex method.
