ABSTRACT
This research purposed to analyze Miss International 2017 Speech: Kevin
Lilliana from Indonesia. To get the goal of the research, the researcher
conducted the research in qualitative research design, with discourse analysis as
the approach. From ten minutes conversation, the researcher transcribed the
speech into text, and then the researcher divided the conversation into clause.
The researcher got 11 clauses. The researcher analyzed clause, cohesion, and
genre. In this case, the research analyzed mood analysis, transitivity, clause
complex, conjunction, reference, lexical relation, register, and generic structure.

Keywords : Clause, Cohesion, Genre

INTRODUCTION
People are human beings that need to communicate with other people by
using a language. Moreover, language is a tool of communication. Someone can
reach the goal to communicate with others by language. The tool of
communication must be appropriated with the purpose of language used. Trask
(2007: 93) defines “language as a formal system of signs governed by
grammatical rules of combination to communicate meaning. The definition
explains that human languages can be described as closed structural system
consisting of rules that relate particular signs to particular meanings. Thus, the
language makes people can convey their message one to another without
difficulties. On the other hand, language is also a media of communication; it is
especially for making some arguments in debate situation.
Language can be delivered spoken and written, even; sometimes there are
some people who deliver their language through gesture. Written language,
usually delivered through text, letter, and others. While, spoken language usually
delivers through conversation or monolog. Halliday (1985, 1994) has argued that
language is structured to make three main kinds of meaning simultaneously. This
semantic is complexity, which allows ideational, interpersonal and textual
meanings.
In this research, the researcher focuses on analyzing clause, cohesion, and
genre found in Miss International 2017 speech: Kevin Lilliana from Indonesia.
The researcher wants to analyze mood analysis, transitivity, clause complex,
conjuncton, reference, lexical relation, register, and generic structure.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
1. Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL)
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a study of language which
focuses on language as a resource of meaning. This theory is introduced by
M.A.K Halliday by using discourse analysis. It views language primarily as a
resource for exploring and understanding the meaning in discourse (Halliday,
1994: xiv). It is different from any other theory of language since it has both
systematic and functional in its characteristic. It is also a functional one
because the conceptual framework on which it is based is a functional rather
than a formal one. It explains how language is used rather than how language is
formed.
The fundamental components of meaning in language are functional
components. Halliday (2002: 198) introduces three functional modes of
meanings of language from the point of the semantic system: (1) ideational
(experiential and logical); (2) interpersonal; and (3) textual. He states that they
are ‘different kinds of meaning potential that relate to the most general
functions that language has evolved to serve’. Furthermore, Martin in English
Text states that Halliday refers to these different types of meaning as
metafunctions-the experiential, the interpersonal, and the textual respectively
(1992: 8).

2. Clause
A clause is a group of related words; but unlike a phrase, a clause has a
subject and verb. An independent clause, along with having a subject and verb,
expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a coherent sentence. In
contrast, a subordinate or dependent clause does not express a complete thought
and therefore is not a sentence. A subordinate clause standing alone is a common
error known as a sentence fragment.
In current context, there are many studies involved with this issue. As
proposed by Halliday (1994: 216), a sentence can be interpreted as a clause
complex: a Head clause together with other clauses that modify it. He further
states that a combination of clauses related Paratactically or hypotactically but not
through embedding; the mode of combination is the mode of organization of the
logical subtype of the ideational metafunction. In this regard, he attests that for
example, clauses combined through coordination form a clause complex. He
argues that the notion of ‘clause complex’ thus enables us to account in full for
the functional organization of sentences (Halliday 1994: 216). Eggins (Eggins,
2004 pp.255-256) defines that the term “clause” itself is called clause complex.
Setia et al (2009, p.1) state that clause or clause simplex equals simple sentence in
formal grammar and clause complex equals complex sentences.

3. Cohesion
Cohesion is the semantic relation between one element and another in a
text (Halliday & Hasan, 1976). A text is cohesive when the elements are tied
together and considered meaningful to the reader. Cohesion occurs when the
interpretation of one item depends on the other, i.e. one item presupposes the
other (Halliday & Hasan, 1976). For instance in the following text: Amy went to
the party. She sat with Sara. The interpretation of the item she depends on the
lexical item Amy. Therefore, the text is considered cohesive because we cannot
understand the meaning of she unless Amy exists in the text. www.ccsenet.org/elt
English Language Teaching Vol. 9, No. 7; 2016 113 Cohesion is not only
concerned with grammar, but also with vocabulary. Hence, it is divided into
grammatical and lexical cohesion.

4. Genre
Genre is a distinctive part of culture that has purpose and steps, as well as
language features which has relationship to the purpose, steps, and the distinctive
culture that the definitions should be interpreted by referring to the social and
cultural context in which the context exists. A genre on the other hand, is a
culturally and linguistically distinct form of discourse such as narrative (e.g, a
story), exposition (e.g, a research report), procedural discourse (e.g, a recipe), and
so on3. According to Swales (1981, 1985, 1990) and Bhatia (1993), “a genre is a
recognizable communicative event characterized by a set of communicative
purpose(s) identified and mutually understood by the members of the professional
or academic community in which it regularly occurs” (Bhatia, 1993:13). Both
authors emphasize the communicative purpose of the text as the most important
features related to genre. It is this communicative purpose that shapes the genre
and gives it internal structure.

5. Miss International
Miss International (Miss International Beauty of the International
Beauty Pageant) is a Tokyo-based International beauty pageant organized by
The International Culture Association. The pageant was first held in 1960.
Along with Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss Earth, this pageant is one of
the Big four international beauty pageant—the most coveted beauty titles when
it comes to International pageant competition.
1. Kevin Lilliana
Kevin Lilliana (born January 5, 1996 in Bandung) is an Indonesian
model and beauty queen who was crowned first runner up (Puteri Indonesia
Lingkungan 2017) for the Puteri Indonesia 2017. On November 14th, 2017,
Lilliana, representing Indonesia, was crowned Miss International
2017 in Japan by the outgoing titleholder, Kylie Verzosa of the Philippines.

METHODOLOGY
The research aims to analyze the transitivity found in Miss International
2017 speech: Kevin Lilliana from Indonesia. A qualitative descriptive study is
used and applied for describing and explaining the phenomenon. Creswell (1994:
145) states that qualitative research is descriptive in that the researcher is
interested in process, meaning, and understanding gained through word or picture.
The data of this research got from the youtube.
The first step is to collect the data, the researcher makes the transcript
found in Miss International 2017 speech: Kevin Lilliana from Indonesia. After
that, the researcher diveds the transcript into every sentence; it aims to make the
analyses easier. Then, the researcher analyzes clause, cohesion, and genre. After
analysing and counting the amount of the result, the researcher interprets the
meaning of the finding. The last, the researcher gives the conclusion of the
research.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

CLAUSE
1. Mood Analysis
Mood has important role in realizing interpersonal meaning because it is
the point in forming the speaker’s judgments ant attitudes. When it takes on the
text, it plays a critical role in carrying out the interpersonal function of the clause.
Thus, Mood consists of two components which are Subject and Finite.
Subject There were some subjects found in Miss International
speech, as follows:
1. Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is my country’s philosophy.
2. It means unity in diversity, different but one.
3. Indonesia is one of few countries
4. that has the diversity of cultures, languages, and
beliefs.
5. That is way I am a big believer of the unity in
diversity.
6. This world is a beautiful place because of the wide
variety and similarity.
7. If I would become Miss International,
8. I will spread the positive various and spead the
culture of excepting and respecting the differences.
9. Because I know that every country has their own
cultures, characters, and identities.
10. I believe,
11. it is not too late for us to change because raise
after fall and integrated after spread it.
Finite
1. Primary tenses Completes analysis of primary tenses found in Miss
International 2017 are:
Past tense :1
Present tense : 9
Future Tense : 1
Total : 11
2. Modality The complete analysis of modals found in the speech can
be seen, as follows:
No Modals Frequency
1 Will 1
2 Can 0
3 Must 0
4 Would 1
5 Should 0
6 Could 0
7 May 0
Total 2

A. Residue
1. Predicator
As stated by Eggins (1994, 2011:161), Residue component is the other
component of the clause that is somehow less essential to the arguability of the
clause than is the Mood element, but Residue component can also contain a
number of functional elements: Predicators, Complements, and any number of
different types of Adjuncts.
There were some predicators found in Miss International speech, as
follows:
 Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is my country’s philosophy (No predicator)
 It means unity in diversity, different but one.
 Indonesia is one of few countries that has the diversity of cultures,
languages, and beliefs. (No predicator)
 That is way I am a big believer of the unity in diversity. (No predicator)
 This world is a beautiful place because of the wide variety and similarity.
(No predicator)
 If I would become Miss International,
 i will spread the positive various and spead the culture of excepting and
respecting the differences.
 Because I know that every country has their own cultures, characters,
and identities.
 Therefore, let’s create a perfect solution by learning, understanding, and
appreciating each other.
 I believe,
 it is not too late for us to change because raise after fall and integrated
after spread it. (No predicator)
2. Complement
There were some complements found in Miss International speech, as
follows:
 Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is my country’s philosophy.
 It means unity in diversity, different but one.
 Indonesia is one of few countries that has the diversity of cultures,
languages, and beliefs.
 That is way I am a big believer of the unity in diversity.

and identities.
 Therefore, let’s create a perfect solution by learning, understanding, and
appreciating each other.
 I believe,
 it is not too late for us to change because raise after fall and integrated
after spread it.
3. Adjunct
 Circumstantial Adjunct
There were no circumstantial adjunt in Miss International 2017.
 Conjunctive Adjunct
“Conjunctive Adjuncts include items such as ‘for instance’, ‘anyway’,
‘moreover’, ‘meanwhile’, ‘therefore’, ‘nevertheless’. “These Conjunctive
Adjuncts have a textual function and so fall outside of analysis of Mood”
(Gerot and Wignell, 1994:34). Here are the examples of Conjunctive
Adjunct found in the speech:
 It means unity in diversity, different but one.
 Indonesia is one of few countries that has the diversity of cultures,
languages, and beliefs.
 i will spread the positive various and spead the culture of excepting and
respecting the differences.
 Because I know that every country has their own cultures, characters,
and identities.
 Therefore, let’s create a perfect solution by learning, understanding, and
appreciating each other.
 it is not too late for us to change because raise after fall and integrated
after spread it.
 Comment Adjunct
Gerot and Wignell (1994:35) states that Comment Adjunct expresses the
speaker’s comment on what he or she is saying. Furthermore, they
(1994:35) give the examples of Comment Adjunct such as ‘frankly’,
‘apparently’, ‘hopefully’, ‘broadly speaking’, ‘understandably’, ‘to my
surprise’. Unfortunately, there was no Comment Adjunct found in this
speech.
 Mood Adjunct
There was not mood adjunct in Miss International 2017 speech.
Mood Types Distribution
Mood in English is realised by the position in the clause of the subject and
finite. There are 2 kind of mood types, as follows; indicative ( declarative
and interrogative) and imperative.
In Miss International speech, there were mood types found in Miss
International speech, for instance;
Indicative -declarative  Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is my country’s

Imperative  Therefore, let’s create a perfect solution by
learning, understanding, and appreciating each
other.
Indicative -declarative  I believe, it is not too late for us to change
because raise after fall and integrated after spread
it.

2. Transitivity
There were 4 process type of transitivity found in Miss International 2017
speech. They are:
Material Process  (1) will spread

Genre : Explanation of becoming Miss International 2017
Definition Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is my country’s
philosophy. It means unity in diversity, different but
one. Indonesia is one of few countries that has the
diversity of cultures, languages, and beliefs. That is
way I am a big believer of the unity in diversity. This
world is a beautiful place because of the wide variety
and similarity.
Process If I would become Miss International, i will
spread the positive various and spread the culture of
excepting and respecting the differences. Because I
know that every country has their own cultures,
characters, and identities. Therefore, let’s create a
perfect solution by learning, understanding, and
appreciating each other.
Conclusion I believe, it is not too late for us to change
because raise after fall and integrated after spread it.\
