Air pollution is one such form that refers to the contamination of the air, irrespective
of indoors or outside. A physical, biological or chemical alteration to the air in the
atmosphere can be termed as pollution. It occurs when any harmful gases, dust, smoke enters
into the atmosphere and makes it difficult for plants, animals, and humans to survive as the
air becomes dirty.

There are 6 concequences of air pollution. The causes of air pollution are the burning
of fossil fuels, the exhaust from factories, agricultural activities, household waste, smoke, and
forest fire (wild fires). The effects of air pollution are respiratory problems, climate change,
ozone depletion, global warming, acidification or acid rain, and global health hazard.

Sulfur dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and
other factory combustibles are one the major cause of air pollution. Pollution emitting from
vehicles including trucks, jeeps, cars, trains, airplanes cause an immense amount of pollution.
But, their overuse is killing our environment as dangerous gases are polluting the
environment. Manufacturing industries release a large amount of carbon monoxide,
hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and chemicals into the air thereby depleting the quality of
air. Petroleum refineries also release hydrocarbons and various other chemicals that pollute
the air and also cause land pollution. Ammonia is a very common byproduct from
agriculture-related activities and is one of the most hazardous gases in the atmosphere. Use of
insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers in agricultural activities has grown quite a lot. They
emit harmful chemicals into the air and can also cause water pollution. Household air lke
indoor tobacco smoking, construction material used in building houses, fuel used for cooking,
heating and lighting, use of incense and various forms of mosquito repellents, use of
pesticides and chemicals used for cleaning at home, and use of artificial fragrances are some
of the various sources that contribute to household air pollution. Cigarettes are made from
tobacco leaves that originally absorbed all their carbon from the atmosphere as they grew.
Tobacco agriculture also generates greenhouse gases of its own, in the form of CO2 from the
diesel used in farm machinery and NO2 from fertiliser – not to mention the CO2 attributed to
packaging, distribution and advertising. Forest fire release pollutants like smoke, sulphur
dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate matter and carbon monoxide into the
atmosphere. The bigger the bushfire, the bigger emissions, the bigger air pollution.

All of the causes making some effects that give a big disadvantage to living things
and our environment, such as respiratory problem from gases released like short-term effects,
which are temporary, include illnesses such as pneumonia or bronchitis. They also include
discomfort such as irritation to the nose, throat, eyes, or skin. Air pollution can also cause
headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Air pollutants cause less-direct health effects when they
contribute to climate change. Heat waves, extreme weather, food supply disruptions, and
other effects related to increased greenhouse gases can have negative impacts on human
health. The main cause of global warming, according to most climate scientists, is the
greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases absorb heat and re-emit it in all directions warming up
the lower atmosphere and the Earth’s surface. Earth’s ozone layer is depleting due to the
presence of chlorofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere. As the ozone
layer will go thin, it will emit harmful rays back on earth and can cause skin and eye related
problems. UV rays also have the capability to affect crops. When sulfuric or nitric acid, both
common emissions from of fossil fuel combustion, combine with water vapor, the vapor
becomes acidic. Acid deposition, commonly called acid rain, though it can be rain, snow,
hail, fog or even dust, is when the acid content is carried down from the sky. Acid eats away
at rocks, discoloring buildings and eroding statues. It can damage and even kill trees and
deprive frogs of their food source. Poor air quality kills people. Air pollution has been linked
to higher rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory diseases such as asthma.
orldwide, bad outdoor air caused an estimated 4.2 million premature deaths in 2016, about 90
percent of them in low- and middle-income countries, according to the World Health
Organization.
