FORWARD

This safety label brochure has been prepared by the Lift Manufacturers Product Section (hereafter
referred to as “LMPS”) of the Material Handling Industry of America. It has been created as a service
to users, designers and specifiers of industrial scissors lifts and tilters. The purpose of this publication
is to provide guidelines for the section and application of safety labels for use on industrial scissors
lifts and tilters. This program is intended as a voluntary guide and should be incorporated into a
comprehensive safety program by users of industrial scissors lifts and tilters.

DISCLAIMER

The information contained in this guideline shows suggested placement for the application of safety labels and is not intended to be all inclusive regarding either
location of the label or its size. Among the variable considerations which may affect placement are environmental factors such as available lighting and location of the
label in relation to the line of sight of the operator and/or maintenance personnel, as well as frequency and proximity of personnel exposure. Although the design and
placements suggested have been prepared on the basis of the best engineering opinions available to the member companies of the Lift Manufacturers Product Section,
both the Lift Manufacturers Product Section and its member companies hereby disclaim any and all responsibility for any property damage, personal injury or any other
damage resulting from the use and application of these Guidelines.
INTRODUCTION

Safety is a prime considertaion in the design, manufature, installation, use and maintenance of industrial
scissors lifts and tilters. It is well reorganized that in many instances, safety labels can increase operator and
maintenance personnel awareness of the inherent hazards involved in lifts. The process of designing and
installing should be supervised by qualified personnel. The operation and maintenance of lifts or tilters should
also be performed only by personnel trained to do so.
The purpose of this publication is to provide guidelines for the selection and application of Safety labels. As
part of the users comprehensive safety program, users of lifts or tilters shall inspect and review safety labels to .
insure their integrity and maximize their effectiveness in accident/injury prevntion.

Relation to America National Standards

SAFETY LABEL COMPLIANCE

The following labels were designed by LMPS with the aid of ANSI Z535. One of the design steps in the
creation of any precautionary label is the determination of the appropriate safety alert symbol and signal
word for that label. To aid the reader in understanding the concept and the importance of the symbol
and signal word, the following has been excerpted from ANSI Z535.4

4.10 Safety Alert Symbols

A symbol which indicates a potential personal injury hazard. It is composed of an equilateral tr
iangle
surrounding an exclamation mark. The safety alert symbol shall not be used to alert persons to
property-damage-only accidents*.

! for use with DANGER signal word

! for use with WARNING signal word

! for use with CAUTION signal word

4.1 Signal Words

The meaning of different signal words as defined by ANSI Z535.6 and Z535.4 standards may be
provided in collateral materials. The following artwork may be used for this purpose.

DANGER indicates a hazardous situation

! DANGER which, if not avoided, will result in death or
serious injury.

WARNING indicates a hazardous situation

! WARNING which, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury.

CAUTION, used with the safety alert

! CAUTION symbol, indicates a hazardous situation
which, if not avoided, could result in
minor or moderate injury.

NOTICE NOTICE is used to address practices

not related to personal injury.
Note: DANGER,WARNING or CAUTION should not be considered for property damage accidents unless personal injury risk
appropriate to these levels is involved. NOTICE is the preferred signal word to address practices not related to personal injury. It
is the intention of the ANSI Z535 committee to eliminate the alternative of using the signal word “CAUTION” without the safety
alert symbol to indicate a hazardous situation not related to personal injury in 2011 version of the standard.

2
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Proper procedures shall be used in applying these or any other labels

(1.) Insure that the surface to which the label(s) will be applied is clean and free of dirt, dust, grease
and moisture.

(2.) If the surface is painted, insure that the paint is dry.

(3.) Press the label on after applying it to the surface. One or more passes over the label with a sponge
or rubber roller will insure that the glue is in good contact with the majority of the surface to
which it is intended to adhere.
