Manufacturing Standards
NEMA VE 1 – This standard speci es the manufacturing requirements for metal cable trays (such as; channel cable tray, ladder cable tray, single-rail cable tray, wire mesh cable
tray, solid bottom or nonventillated cable tray and trough or ventilated cable tray) and associated ttings for use in accordance with the rules of the National Electrical Code.
This standard also provides load/span class designations.
Note: NEMA VE 1 and CSA C22.2 Speci cation #126.1 have been harmonized without deviation, therefore this standard is in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code.
NEMA VE 1 Metal Cable Tray Systems can be obtained from Global Engineering Documents, www.global.ihs.com
NEMA FG 1 – This standard speci es the manufacturing requirements for nonmetallic ( berglass) cable trays (such as; ladder cable tray trough or ventilated cable tray, solid
bottom or nonventillated cable tray and channel cable tray) and associated ttings for use in accordance with the rules of the National Electrical Code.
NEMA FG 1 Fiberglass Cable Tray Systems can be obtained from Global Engineering Documents, www.global.ihs.com
IEC-61537 – This international standard speci es requirements and tests for cable tray systems (such as; all metal cable trays including wire mesh cable tray and nonmetallic
cable trays) for the support, accommodation of cables and possibly other electrical equipment in electrical and/or communications systems installations.
IEC-61537 Cable Tray Systems and Cable Ladder Systems for Electrical Installations can be obtained from Global Engineering Documents, www.global.ihs.com
UL 568 – This Underwriters Laboratories standard covers the performance requirements for the safe application of berglass cable tray.
Installation Code
NFPA 70 – The National Electrical Code covers the installation requirements for the safe application of cable tray systems including ladder, ventilated trough, ventilated channel,
solid bottom and other similar structures.
Article 392 provides requirements such as “Uses Permitted”, which includes wiring methods permitted to be installed in cable tray, the “Cross Sectional Area Requirements for

Cable Trays Used as Equipment Grounding Conductor” and the “Maximum Allowable Fill Area for Single-Conductor and Multi-Conductor Cables”
Article 310 provides the ampacities of conductors.
CEC C22.1-Part 1 – The Canadian Electrical Code is a safety standard for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in Canada.
Section 12-2200 provides requirements such as “Method of Installation”, “Ampacities of Conductors” and “Conductors in Cable Trays”.
The CEC can be obtained from the Canadian Standards Assn., www.csa.ca (http://www.cabletrays.com/www.csa.ca).
NFPA 79 – This standard covers the safe application of electric/electronic equipment, apparatus or systems supplied as part of industrial machinery or mass production
industrial equipment.
NFPA 70E – This standard covers protection to the employee from electrical hazards such as shock, arc blasts and explosions initiated by electricity.
Installation Guidelines
NEMA VE 2 – This standard is a practical guideline used by engineers, contractors and maintenance personnel for the proper shipping, handling, storing, maintenance and
installation of both metal and nonmetallic cable tray systems.
NECA/NEMA 105 – This standard describes installation and maintenance procedures for metal cable tray systems used to support power and communications cabling. This
standard was developed jointly with NEMA.
Speci c Applications
ASCE 7-05 – This American Society of Civil Engineers standard provides the minimum design load requirements for wind, snow, ice and earthquake.
