Foreign Language Exploratory and Core Curriculum

Introduction
The following pages constitute the mission statement of the foreign language core curriculum. This curriculum has
been aligned with the Arizona State Standards adopted by the State Board of Education on April 27, 1998. The
seven Arizona State Standards are Communication (Standards 1, 2, and 3), Culture (Standard 4), Connections
(Standard 5), Comparisons (Standard 6), and Communities (Standard 7). All schools are expected to use this core
curriculum as the basis for planning foreign language instruction. Teachers are encouraged to extend, expand, and
enrich from this base as needed to meet the needs of their students.

Descriptions are provided for each curricular standard and goal.

Proficiency

Exploratory–Introduce and Develop: It is expected that the goals of the Foreign Language Exploratory
curriculum will be introduced during the course.
Level I–Introduce and Develop: It is expected that the goals of the Foreign Language curriculum will be
introduced during the course. These goals will be further developed as needed.
Level II–Mastery: It is expected that the goals introduced in the Level I course will be mastered in Level II. In
addition some goals will be introduced in Level II.
Level III–Reinforce: Generally the goals of the Foreign Language curriculum have been mastered in Level II;
therefore, in Level III these goals will be reinforced and developed more completely. Goals that were
introduced in Level II will be mastered in Level III.
Levels IV and V–Reinforce: The advanced levels of the Foreign Language curriculum emphasize developing a
deep understanding of the language.

Assessment

Student achievement in foreign language will be assessed in several ways. The teacher will assess the student
through daily observations and classroom tests. During the 2000 – 2001 school year, foreign language teachers will
develop a proficiency test for the Level I French and Spanish programs. Students will be assessed in the areas of
reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the target language.
