Children’s Human Body Encyclopedia is a book that introduces how our
amazing body works. It is written by Steve Parker. It clearly explains every single part of our body, such as our bones, our lungs, our heart, our eyes, our brain, and so on. One new fact that I learnt from this book is the nervous system. The brain is one of the most important organs in our body, because it controls what we do, think and remember, and directs the other organs to carry out their functions. The brain is made of billions of microscopic nerve cells with trillion of long, wire-like fibres. Most of these cells make up the nerves, forming a network that links the brain to all the other body parts. The brain and nerves together form the nervous system. Another new fact that I learnt is about sneezing. We sneeze when small particles of dust that get into our nose irritate the nose lining. Do you realize that when you sneeze, you always close your eyes? This is a natural phenomenon. Besides, a typical sneeze will blow about 40000 tiny droplets of mucus and saliva out of the nose and mouth. The most amazing fact is that sneeze blow air out of the nose at a speed of up to 150 km/h! To summarize, our body may seem quiet and relaxed, but in fact it is very busy. Our heart beats to pump our blood (circulatory system), our lungs breathe to take in oxygen from the air (respiratory system), our intestines break down our food we ate (digestive system), our muscles and bones are joined together to support our body (skeletal and muscular system) and many other things. Every part of our body is very important. If one single part of the body is missing or malfunctioning, we will be sick, injured, or even dead. This book clearly tells us what our body consists of, and the characteristics and functions of every tiny part. It is full of fascinating facts and intriguing information. Moreover, there are many pictures and diagrams with labels, which can help us understand the passages more easily. For those who are interested in human bodies, why not you read this book?
