Industrial areas in Hong Kong


Currently, the industrial land use of Hong Kong is located in industrial areas
and industrial estates.

So, what are industrial areas? What are industrial estates?

What are the differences between industrail areas and industrial estates?
Industrial Areas

Industrial area refers to a region with extremely dense industry.

It is usually heavily urbanized.

It is located in inner city areas and


old districts, also old urban areas

Where are they actually located??

Moving to Mainland

Most of the manufacturing industries relocates to Mainland

However some still remains in Hong Kong

for example: Soy sauce factory in Kwai Chung

Multi-storey factory buildings can also be seen in

They were industrial centres of Hong Kong in the 60s and 70s

Focused on:

Clothing ■ Food wholesale and retail

After relocating to China, Cheung Sha Wan has become centres of:
Industrial Estates

There are only 3 industrial estates in Hong Kong

Tai Po, Yuen Long and Tseung Kwan O

Tai Po’s is the first developed among those (1978)

Built in new towns (suburbs)

Low-income people

Many public housing estates and low-income residential estates and households in HK

Living at the edge of the inner city

Near industrial areas

Mixed industrial, commercial and residential areas

High-income people

Living in great deal of luxury

Places with beautiful environment

People are trying hard to avoid industrial factories near their homes.

The industrial areas are not favoured by people due to its pollution problems.

People with better socio-economic status are living in high-income residential areas which are very far away from
the industrial areas so to avoid such pollution problems.

For low-income residents, they have no choice and that’s why they are living in there.
