the side of the road, including some cardboard boxes that appeared to be
quite heavy. He looked suspicious and seemed to be in a hurry.
Inspector: So (3) this happened the day before yesterday — the twenty-seventh of
September?
Chris: Yes, that’s right.
Inspector: What was the time?
Chris: It was around six o’clock in the morning.
Inspector: OK — six a.m. Where were you walking your dog?
Chris: I was walking down St Martin Road. I walk my dog there every day.
Inspector: So you saw the van on St Martin Road?
Chris: Yes, it was parked outside the jewellery shop that was robbed the other
day.
Inspector: You’re right — that jewellery shop was robbed on Tuesday. So do (4) you
think you might have seen the robber?
Chris: Possibly — that’s why I thought I should call the police.
Inspector: You were right to think that, Mr Evans. OK, let’s move on. How far away
from the van were you?
Chris: The van was on the other side of the road — maybe thirty metres away.
Inspector: OK, and what was the weather like?
Chris: (5)
Fair and warm.
Inspector: So you had a clear view?
Chris: Yes, I did.
Inspector: Was anything blocking your view — any cars, buses, things like that?
Chris: No, the road was empty — no cars or buses — nothing. It was a quiet
morning.
Inspector: Did you see any other people?
Chris: I think there were a few people on the road — maybe three or four.
Inspector: You mentioned you saw a man unloading some heavy boxes. Was it just
one man?
Chris: Yes.
Inspector: Can you describe the man to me, please?
Chris: Sure. (6) He looked strong. His hair was short, and he was clean-shaven.
He was wearing jeans and a white T-shirt.
Inspector: OK, let me just jot that down. He is strong, with short hair, no beard, and
he was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans. How tall was he?
Chris: (6)
He was pretty tall — probably (6) around one-point-seven-five metres.
Inspector: How old did he look?
Chris: I’d say he was in his forties.
Inspector: What colour was the van?
Chris: White.
Inspector: Did you see anyone inside the van?
Chris: No, (7) the windows were shaded.
Inspector: I see. So there might’ve been other people in the van?
Chris: Maybe — I can’t be sure.
Inspector: Did you note down the van’s number plate by any chance?
Chris: I don’t remember seeing a number plate on the van — no, I don’t think
there was one.
Inspector: No number plate? (8) The van must have been stolen then.
Chris: You mean the man stole the van from someone?
Inspector: It’s quite likely. Thank you for passing on the information, Mr Evans.
Chris: Glad to help. I hope it helps you to arrest the robber.
Inspector: Me too.

Jane: Good morning, Mr Lee. Would you be free to talk about the Interschool Kung
Fu Show now?
Principal: Sure, come in, Jane. I heard you had a meeting with the student representatives
from other schools yesterday. How’d it go?
Jane: Really well. (3) Twelve young kung fu masters from the Shaolin Temple in the
mainland have confirmed they’ll participate in the event.
Principal: Fantastic! Are they coming to Hong Kong just for this show?
Jane: No, they’re going to participate in other community projects during their stay.
We’ve also finalised the venue — it’s going to be held at (2) Wan Chai Sports
Ground. The school halls aren’t large enough to accommodate a big audience.
Principal: Wan Chai Sports Ground is a great venue. Do we have the date and time for
the event?
Jane: Yes, the show will start at three in the afternoon on the (1) twenty-second of
December.
Principal: OK, let me just note that down on my calendar ... done. Are any of our
students going to participate in the performance?
Jane: Yes, (4) each school is going to send five students to take part in the
performance.
Principal: Excellent. Are you going to invite our Kung Fu Club members to participate in
the event? I’m sure many of them will be keen to perform with kung fu
masters in a show.
Jane: No doubt. Our kung fu advisor, Mr Ming, could choose the best students to
participate in the show.
Principal: Good idea! I’m sure Mr Ming will be happy to help. What else do we need to
do to prepare for the event?
Jane: We’ll also need to get some (5, 6) volunteers to help set up the venue, and others
to join the cheering team.
Principal: I’m sure many students will volunteer to set up the venue — since they’ll get a
free ticket to the show.
Jane: Yeah. I’m going to talk to the president of the Student Union to get ideas about
how to organise a cheering team.
Principal: Great! What else do we need to do?
Jane: We need to arrange transport for students to and from the venue. Do you think
our school secretary might help with this?
Principal: I’m sure Ms Chu won’t mind arranging transport for the event. I’ll talk to her
about it later today.
Jane: Thanks, Mr Lee. For the five students who will participate in the show, I think
we need to write to their parents and get their consent. Do you think you can
take care of this, Mr Lee?
Principal: Of course. I’ll also (7) invite their parents to watch the show.
Jane: Great! I’ll let the organisers know we need to (8) provide free tickets for
parents. Let me just jot that down ... ‘provide free tickets for parents’ ... done.
Principal: Looks like you’ve got everything sorted out. I’m really looking forward to the
show!
Jane: Me too!
Announcer: That is the end of Task two. You now have one minute to tidy up your
answers.

Principal: Hmm ... the coaches are too big. (2, 3) Why don’t we arrange to have two vans
— the medium-sized one, not the biggest one.
Ms Chu: Sounds good to me, Mr Lee. What about pick-up points? Should I arrange the
vans to (4) pick up the students at the school?
Principal: Yes, I think that’s a good idea. The show starts at three, and the students need
to be at the venue before noon. I think the vans should (5) arrive at the school at
eleven o’clock.
Ms Chu: No problem — I’ll arrange it. And what about the special visitor passes?
Principal: I’ll have the event organiser send them to you as soon as we’re sure of the
numbers. They’ll need to be sent only to the parents planning on attending the
event.
Ms Chu: How will I know which parents are going to attend the event? Do you have a
list?
Principal: I’m planning to meet up with Mr Ming. He has all the names of students
who’ll be performing at the event, and the names of the parents who’ve shown
interest in watching the show. Once I have this information, I’ll give you two
lists — (6, 7) one listing the students performing in the event, and the other
listing the parents planning to attend the show.
Ms Chu: Thanks, Mr Lee. I’ll (8) send out the special visitor passes by post as soon as
we receive them from the organisers. Is there anything else I can help you
with, Mr Lee?
Principal: No, that should be it for now. I’ll get back to you as soon as I get the lists.
Thanks for your help, Ms Chu.
Ms Chu: My pleasure!
Announcer: That is the end of Task three. You now have one minute to tidy up your
answers.

Mrs Lee: How’s the itinerary for our next hike coming along, Sam?
Sam: Not bad — I just need a bit of information from you.
Mrs Lee: OK.
Sam: Well, for starters, what trail are we going to hike on? I have a map showing
the trail’s start and end points, but it doesn’t mention the actual name of the
trail.
Mrs Lee: It’s the (1) MacLehose Trail — Stage eight.
Sam: That’s a bit of a mouthful, isn’t it? Would you mind repeating that for me?
Mrs Lee: Let me spell it out for you. ‘MacLehose’ is spelt ‘M-A-C-L-E-H-O-S-E’ — all
one word with the ‘M’ and ‘L’ capitalised — followed by ‘Trail’.
Sam: One second while I write that down ... there. And you said it’s stage eight of
the trail?
Mrs Lee: That’s right.
Sam: OK, and what about the length of the trail?
Mrs Lee: We’re going to hike (3) about ten kilometres.
Sam: How long do you think it’ll take us to hike that far?
Mrs Lee: The hike itself should take us (4) about five hours to complete.
Sam: It’s going to be a challenge — that’s for sure!
Mrs Lee: Yeah, it’ll probably be the hardest hike we’ve ever had.
Sam: OK, why don’t we move on to the schedule? I know we’re going to meet at
the school at eight A-M, but I’m not sure about how we’re going to get to the
trail.
Mrs Lee: It shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes to get everyone organised at the
school. After that, we’re going to (10) take the M-T-R to Tsuen Wan Station.
From Tsuen Wan M-T-R station, we’re going to (11) take taxis to the trail’s
starting point.
Sam: What time do you think we’ll actually get going on the trail?
Mrs Lee: (12)
Nine o’clock.
Sam: OK.
Mrs Lee: We’re going to put in three solid hours of hiking — taking time for short water
breaks each hour, of course — before we (13) have a picnic. We’ll find a nice
place to eat lunch — somewhere with a spectacular view. I have a few spots in
mind.
Sam: That sounds amazing — I can’t wait!
Mrs Lee: After lunch, we’re going to get back on the trail ...
Sam: Sorry, Mrs Lee, you got a bit ahead of me there — how long are we going to
take for the picnic?
Mrs Lee: Oh, right — (14) half an hour.
Sam: Got it.
Mrs Lee: We’re going to hike hard for two hours so that we can arrive at the end of the
trail at two-thirty. Then we’ll (16) take taxis to Tsuen Wan M-T-R station, and
head back to the school.
Sam: Right, I think that about covers it. Thanks for your help, Mrs Lee. I’ll email
the itinerary to everyone this evening. I know they’re all excited to find out
more about the hike.
Mrs Lee: It’s going to be a good one!
Announcer: That is the end of the listening component of Part B.
