Guidelines for a Successful Interview

An interview is a short discussion to assess you if you have the required proficiency for
a job. You are asked questions about your personality, interests, academics and
professional experiences. An interview gives employer a chance to know you in person
and assess your suitability on the basis of your personality traits such as your caliber,
behavior, attitude, expression and confidence. Apart from knowing your personal
suitability for the job, the interview also verifies the authenticity of your qualifications
and expertise that is mentioned in your CV. Keeping in view all these areas of
assessment, you have to prove yourself as the best candidate for the job.

The guidelines for a successful interview are as follows:

1. Prepare and practice: You will be asked about your personality, interests, academics and expertise.
You should think which type of questions can be asked about each of those areas. Prepare a list of
question for each area and devise impressive answer for each. You will be asked various areas in your
academic and practical learning. For instance, the Job requires an MBA degree, you will be asked
about key topics of MBA courses that relates to the job. You should revise your courses in order to be
able respond correctly. Similarly, if you have mentioned work experience in your CV, you will be asked
about your practical learning in the area of your experience.

2. Prepare the common questions asked in interviews: There are a few questions which are asked in
almost every interview. Prepare impressive answer for such questions. These questions include: What
are you hobbies? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Why do we hire you for this position?
What do you like or dislike about the current position? How can you work under stress or pressure?

3. Knowledge about organization and job description: Gather proper information about the
organization and have sound knowledge of description of the job, you are applying for. You will be
asked question about the both.

4. Prepare lines to introduce yourself: one of the common questions asked in every interview is:
Introduce yourself. You have to introduce yourself in a few lines. Prepare a short comprehensive
introduction for yourself using appealing lines.

5. Dress up well: Be in a proper get-up for interview. It adds to your personality. Plan what to wear for
interview. Dress selection depends on the organization and nature of job you are applying for. Your
dress should be simple but clean and decent having no wrinkles on it. Wear a slight perfume too.

6. Be on time: Reach the venue of interview an hour earlier than the prescribed time. It will be a new
place, so you would need a few minutes to relax. Meet other applicants or general staff attendants at
the venue to feel more acquainted and relax.

7. Your rst impression: You will be called in for interview. Entering the room, greet the panel with a
smiling face to have a good impression on them. During the interview remain moderate, neither too
serious to look rude nor too informal to look funny.

8. Have con dence but be humble: Con dence counts a lot for selection for a job. Your con dence
should re ect on your face. But never show over-con dence. Have con dence but also be humble in
your expression.

9. Eye contact: Do not look down to the oor or up to the ceiling while talking or listening to interviewer.
Maintain a proper eye contact with the interviewer during the interview.

10. Express professionally: You should express your views in a very formal and professional style. Avoid
informal style of expression.

11. Decent body language: Do not sit too rm or too relax in the chair. Sitting rm in a xed style, having
arms folded and narrating answers like robot would not favour you in interview. During expressing
your views, move your hands according to your expression to maintain a good body language.

12. Show your enthusiasm and devotion: Be enthusiastic and lively during the interview. You words
should have exquisite energy in them. Also try show that you are highly ambitious about the job by
expressing your devotion towards it.

13. Be speci c in your answers and give examples: Your answer should be concise and speci c to the
question.  Avoid giving unnecessary explanation. Supporting your answers with relevant example
would have a good impact on the interviewer.

14. Don’t talk too much: Do not talk too much just to prove that you are more expressive. It has a very
bad impression, particularly when the applicant is giving useless and irrelevant explanations.
Interview is a two way communication and has short time in which interviewer wants to explore more
about you. Hence, be speci c in your answers to give them more time to ask you more question and
know you more.
15. What if you don’t know the answer: If you don’t know the answer to one or more questions, don’t
worry. It does not necessarily means that you will be disquali ed. Interviewers understand that a

person must not necessarily know everything. But how do you respond in such a situation?  If you are
completely blank about the answer, better say, ‘I am sorry, I have no idea about that’ rather than giving a
wrong answer. But if you have some rough idea, then start your answer with, ‘I am not sure but it
is…………’. If you answer correctly that is good. Even if you answer wrong, you have mentioned in the
start that though you were not sure about that but u tried to gure it out.

16.  End with thanking the interviewer: When the interview ends, thank your interviewer with a smiling
face.
