SUMMARY
The Climatology from Satellites Group is a small but fairly active and productive research group. Besides conventional
pure and applied research, we also develop innovative activities mainly related to the use of Earth Observation data
and Remote Sensing Techniques which may well be opportunity for business within a climate change
environment. A suitable example is the complementary poster on the RESEWAM-O EIP Water Action Group in this
Market Place. Our underlying application topic is validation of Earth Observation data and products at the
Valencia Anchor Station and the development of an Experimental Observatory of the Water Cycle, and this
is the basis for many challenging business applications such as Water Management Optimisation, Smart
Agriculture, Carbon Footprint and LCA analysis, etc. We have the instrumental means, optimum site conditions,
long-term knowledge experience and mind openness that could serve business as a “test laboratory field for
developing new ideas and products”. Our current research topics are:
•Validation of ESA SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) and NASA SMAP (Soil Moisture Active and Pasive) land products
•Intercomparison of SMOS, SMAP and Aquarius level 1 brightness temperatures
•Validation of Copernicus Sentinel-3 OLCI (Ocean and Land Colour Instrument) land products
•Validation of EUMETSAT IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) ozone profiles
•Application of Earth Observation data and Remote Sensing Techniques to Water Management Optimisation
•Estimation of surface energy balance and carbon and water vapour fluxes over vineyards
•Urban adaptation to climate change
•We are recently introducing ourselves in coastal water quality studies with OLCI and Sentinel-1 radar data
