Lesson Plan 3.

Unit 3: ENERGY IN THE HOME: Household Electricity

Topic: Pioneers in the Field of Electricity
Time Frame: 1 day

I. OBJECTIVES

General Objective
Appreciate the contributions of Franklin, Coulomb, Volta, Ohm and notable Filipino
scientists in the understanding of electricity.

Specific Objective
Cite contributions of Franklin, Coulomb, Volta, Ohm and other Filipino inventor.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Lesson: The pioneers in the field of electricity

B. Reference
Science and Technology IV Text

C. Materials
Any physics book

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Motivation
1. Ask the class some or all of the questions:
- What are the things you enjoy doing most?
- What do you think would hinder you from doing them?
- Had the following persons: Franklin, Coulomb, Volta, Ohm and other
scientist in the field of electricity not been around during their time, do
you think your world now would still be the same? Why and why not?

B. Lesson/Activity Proper
1. Let the students prepare the things for the role playing. The grouping
and activity must have been assigned to them two or three days before.
2. Inform them the criteria for evaluation.
Creativity – 30%
Presentation- 30%
Concepts- 40%
3. Let the five different groups The different groups of 6 to 8 members,

Unit 3. Energy in the Home Lesson Plan 3.1 Pioneers in the Field of Electricity 3- 1
present the contribution of one of the scientists that pioneered the
development of electricity in the form of role playing. These scientists
are Volta, Coulomb, Ohm, Franklin and Gregorio Zara. The members
of the 6th group will act as judges,

C. Discussion
1. Encourage the students’ reaction/comments on the different presentation
regarding the scientist featured and the concepts incorporated.
2. Allow each group to rate the other groups based on criteria given. (Provide
each group a rating sheet/evaluation)

D, Generalization
1. Ask the class questions that would elicit the following concepts/Ideas taken
up.

A list of these follows:

 Charles Coulomb (1736-1806) is a French physicist in the eighteenth
century. Discovered the inverse square relationship between electrical
forces and distance of any two object .
 Coulomb’s law states that for charged particles (q1 and q2),.or objects
that are small compared to the distance between them, the force (F)
between the charges varies directly as the product of the charges and
inversely as the square of the distance (d) between them. That is,
F = k(q1q2)/d2
 Benjamin Franklin proved that lightning is an electrical phenomenon.
He demonstrated this in his famous kite-flying experiment. Also
found that charge leaks of sharp points and fashioned the first
lightning rod.
 George Ohm a German physicist, develops the relationship between
current through a resistor and the potential difference across it in
1826. This is popularly known as Omhs’ law.
 Allesandro Volta is an Italian Physicist (1745-1827). The unit of
measurement for electric potential which is volt is named after him.

E. Valuing
1. After the group’s presentation, the following questions may be asked:
- If you are to choose from among the scientists, who would you
want to be? Why?
- What would you do to show your appreciation of what these
scientists did?

IV AGREEMENT
1. Ask your students to look around the house and inspect their electrical
wirings.
2. Warn them to be extra careful about electricity and live wire connections.
They should not touch bare electrical wirings.

Assignment

Direction
1. Research on the following scientists: Benjamin Franklin, Charles
Coulomb, Allesandro Volta, George Ohm and Zara. Find out what
they contributed in the field of electricity.
2. Then, in group of 6 – 8 members, prepare a role play to show what
they did. One group, one scientist.
3. Do the role play in 10 minutes.

Note: Assignment must be given a week before the activity commence.

Divide the class into 6 groups . Assignment on whose group will take care
of who will be done through drawing lots. The sixth group will acts as
judge.
The judges will be assigned to lay out the detailed criteria in judging the
presentation. They will also make the rating sheet.
