Reading Log
For each day that you have a selection to read from The Awakening, you will
compose an approximately one-page entry in your journal. For each entry, you
should identify one line from that night’s reading that particularly stood out to you
and explain why it stood out to you.
At the end of the novel, you will select one entry that you feel is a good
representation of your work and it will be assessed for a quiz grade. The other five
entries will each count for one homework assignment.
Each day in class, you will be given the chance to share your entries with a small
group of peers (the same group with which you worked on the Frankenstein
presentations). Because of this, you must write an entry each night, not wait until
it is time to turn in the journal to write entries for previous days. If you do not have
a journal entry prepared for the day it is to be discussed, you will receive a zero for
that day’s homework grade.
Looking Ahead…
For your final project of the novel, you will be composing a fictional, dramatic,
poetic, or autobiographical piece that addresses a social issue or issues about which
you feel strongly. It may help to consider this while reading The Awakening.
Expanded instructions on this project are forthcoming.
