INTRODUCTION

“Smart” nowadays is a new iconic word which is taking the world by a

storm. From introduction of Smart phones, followed by Smart tv,
Smart Watch and now Smart Home, technology has taken a paramount
stride to establish that scope for innovation and development is
infinite.
The introduction of Smart Home (Home Automation) is a revolution
which defines a new scientific method of living . It is such an
unprecedented approach which has completely changed the
conventional method of living.
Smart Homes are the next generation way of living which will be
familiar with not only with the aristocrats of the society but people
from mid class back ground can also make themselves familiar with
this innovative modern scientific method of living.

Understanding Home Automation (Smart Homes)
With the advancement of time and technology, we have become more smart
and responsible towards our lives. So, now, even for the smallest things, we
decide based on the long term profit that we are going to achieve from the
same. Needless to say, for a decision as big as buying a home, which, in most of
the cases is a once in a lifetime affair, we all become extremely careful. We think
about various parameters like rate, location, special features, amenities etc.,
which can be proved as beneficial for ourselves in the coming years.

In this context, a new concept that is getting heaps of attention these days, is
automated homes, or smart homes. Through Home automation one get to
seamlessly control all the aspects of their home. Each and every electrical
appliance in the "Smart Home" can be integrated into the "Home Automation"
Network. So no more switching on the lights bulbs or shutting down the
computer. The system will take care of it all. It is sort of like magic. Step into a
room and the all the lights and AC will be switched on. Step out and it will be
turned off. Well AC is good in summer but what about when the mercury dips?
Nothing to worry, just like magic it will know when to switch it on and when
not to. Having over a guest at home while at office? Through home automation
technology one can actually open the gates, switch on the lights and AC and
make the guest feel comfortable while working at office.

A home blessed with automation technology, not only make our lives easier, it
also works wonders for reducing the maintenance and energy costs. Just by a
single click on our smart phones or our tabs, with which we are clung most of
the times, we can literally control all the devices of our homes and the cost
includes just the initial installation cost along with a nominal maintenance cost.
Needless to mention, apart from 'controlling' the home, we can also keep a close
look on the home, ensuring the safety and security of the home while we are
away. Also, as the simple but often forgotten tasks like switching on/off of
electronic devices can be monitored and done remotely, installing the
technology in our homes ensures energy efficiency as well.

What do you mean by Smart Homes ?
We are living in the world of automation where most of the systems are getting
automated, such as industrial automation, homes and other business sectors.
Home automation systems are advancement to the mechanization processes
wherein human efforts are needed with the machinery equipments to operate
various loads in homes. It involves automatic controlling of home appliances
using different technologies and controllers over desktops, laptops smart
phones or tablets.

How it works ?
Home automation system makes the operations of various home appliances
more convenient and saves energy. With the energy saving concept, home
automation or building automation makes life very simple nowadays. It
involves automatic controlling of all electrical or electronic devices in homes or
even remotely through wireless communication. Centralized control of lighting
equipments, air conditioning and heating, audio/video systems, security
systems, kitchen appliances and all other equipments used in home systems is
possible with this system.

This system is mainly implemented by sensors, controlling devices and

actuators as shown in the figure. The sensors detects light, motion, temperature
and other sensing elements, and then send that data to the main controlling
devices. These sensors can be thermocouples or thermistors, photo detectors,
level sensors, pressure sensors, current transformers, IR sensors, etc., which
need an additional signal conditioning equipment to communicate with the
main controller.

Controllers may be personal computers/laptops, touch pads, smart phones, etc.,

attached to the controlling devices like programmable-logic controllers that
receive the information from the sensors, and based on the program, control the
actuators. This program can be modified based on the load operations. The
programmable controller allows to connect various sensors and actuators
through various input and output modules whether they are analog or digital.

Actuators are the final controlling devices like limit switches, relays, motors
and other controlling mechanisms which finally control the home equipments.
Communication plays an important role in this home automation system for the
7|Page
remote access of these operations. This smart home system also provides
continuous monitoring through video surveillance with cameras, scheduling,
and energy saving operations. This is the best solution even for the elderly and
the disabled persons to operate equipments.

ADVANTAGES OF HOME AUTOMATION

The benefits of home automation typically fall under few categories, including
savings , safety, convenience and control. Additionally some consumers
purchase home automation for comfort and peace of mind.
Here is a closer look at some of the biggest benefits that home automatiomn
provides.
Savings : Smart thermostats and smart light bulbs saves energy , cutting utility
costs over time. Some home automation monitor water usage, helping to
prevent exorbitant water bills. An automated home shuts off lights when no one
is around, limits the power drained to your electronics when they are not being
used , and keeps the temperature comfortable in the most energy efficient
manner possible.
The department of Energy estimates that air conditioning is responsible for
54% of the home’s energybill alone. Studies have shown that smart thermostats
can cut heating and cooling costs by 20% . That means that a person can save
10% of his home’s energy bill just by installing a smart thermostat. Just imagine
how much a person can save by installing all smart home appliances.
Safety : Many home automation technologies fall under the umbrella f home
security. Consumers purchase these devices because they want to make their
homes secured . Automated lighting and censors are designed exclusively
against burglary and theft. Security cameras offers benefit through remote
monitoring of package deliveries or real time video of home inhabitants or
unwanted visitors.
Convenience: Because home automation technology perform rote tasks
automatically , end users experience great convenience and comfort.Lots of
smart gadgets are compatible with one another , and a user can set different
triggers between devices to automate regular home processes. For instance an
user can set his smart locks to turn on his smart lighting whenever he unlocks
his front door.

throughout the home . Connected devices can also help create a comfortable
atmosphere . They provide intelligent and adaptive lighting , sound,
temperature , which can all help to create a blissful ambience.
A Peace of Mind : Finally , many customers invest in home automation
technology for peace of mind. A new mom or dad can check on their little one
,thanks to the smart cameras and its ancillaries or if you cant remember
whether you have closed the garage after your exit, you can easily verify
remotely with the help of your mobile app.
Resale : When time comes to sale smart home, sellers will have an abundance of
effective selling points . Whichever advantage of a smart home appeals to a
given buyer, the seller can explain the system and discuss how it makes life
easier. Homes with automated systems have the potential to give a higher
return on investment compared to the homes possessing conventional
technologies.

Integrator.
Who is a System Integrator ?
A systems integrator (SI) is an individual or business that builds computing
systems for clients by combining hardware, software, networking and storage
products from multiple vendors.
Using a systems integrator, a company can align cheaper, preconfigured
components and commercial off-the-shelf software to meet key business goals,
as opposed to more expensive, customized implementations that may require
original programming or manufacturing unique components.

Hiring a systems integrator to combine various subsystems into an integrated

solution can also simplify contracting and vendor management for the
customer, who would otherwise need to purchase each subsystem separately
and work with multiple vendors. Systems integration is thus both a
procurement method and technical activity.

Marketing Potential of Home Automation
The trend of automating home activities by using intelligent terminals to
control appliances and equipment has started gaining popularity in India. Here
we consider the business opportunities and constraints.

Home automation is today a growing market globally, bringing new and

exciting opportunities for technology companies.

According to industry experts, the market will be driven by the trend towards
energy efficient, safe, luxurious and convenient homes or smart homes.
According to a report published by Markets , ‘APAC Smart Homes Market–By
Products, Services and Geography – Analysis & Forecast (2013-2020),’ the total
market for smart homes in the Asia Pacific region will be worth US$9.28 billion
by 2020. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Going forward, in the era of 4G deployments, mobile service providers will

boost these figures further, taking smart home automation from being a
privilege of the few rich to a truly mass scale opportunity.
Although home automation in India is still a nascent market, in sync with the
global trend, the domestic home automation sector is also going to see
phenomenal growth in the next few years.

A research report published by Researchbeam in February 2016, forecasts that

the home automation market in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of 23.63 per
cent in the coming six years.
Metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad are those with the most
potential, where penetration is expected to increase further. This trend is being
followed in cities like Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, too.

Growth drivers

The growth opportunities of the home automation market are due to increasing
adoption of automated services, and government incentives for green
initiatives.

The market will also be driven by the increasing demand for energy efficient
solutions and rising security concerns. The ‘smart home’ concept has undergone
a significant shift. Just a few years ago, smart homes were expensive and
appealed only to early adopters of a high net worth.
However, as technology moves ahead and smart products become affordable,
there is a growing interest among general consumers also.

16 | P a g e
Factors such as growing employment opportunities, steady economic
development, easy availability of housing finance, increasing urbanisation,
rising standards of living, and increased consumer spending on lifestyle
products, are also driving the growth of home automation.
The key trends driving the adoption of smart homes can be listed under three
broad categories:

Accessibility and affordability of smart homes: Rapid strides in technology

made smart homes affordable to the middle class, largely due to innovations
that allowed for the development of smaller and lower-cost sensors and
actuators that gather information from devices in real-time. In addition to
sensors and hardware, the digital home has become accessible because of the
further development of inexpensive, cloud-based hub services through which
those automated devices are able to communicate in a seamless manner.

This is driving a host of new digital home services such as remote monitoring,
lighting and ambient temperature control, and the automated turning on/off of
devices.

Rapid growth of connected consumer electronics: A new era of connectivity is

rapidly becoming a reality with the development of smart technologies
allowing devices to connect and talk with one another

A large number of Internet-enabled but physically unconnected devices in

India will be connected to the Web and the country could become very relevant
in the M2M communications landscape in the near future.

This in turn would enable the IoT ecosystem for the connected home. As all the
elements essential for creating smart homes come together, the concept of
home automation is on the verge of taking off in a big way.

Increasing demand for new services in the home : Over the years, the evolving
needs of home buyers have translated into a whole new set of consumer
preferences and expectations from real estate developers.

What was earlier considered luxury has now become the standard. Not to forget
the rise of a financially powerful consumer class that demands a standard of
living and luxury at par with the western world.

17 | P a g e
The market at a glance

The home automation market in India includes but is not limited to centralised
controls for lighting, security checks/locks for home access, HVAC (heating,
ventilation and air conditioning) controls and others. The market can be
segregated as follows:

• On the basis of application: From the applications perspective, the market

is classified into segments such as lighting, safety and security,
entertainment and energy management. About a year ago, the market
share of safety and security applications exceeded that of entertainment
applications. This is due to the rising concerns related to security among
the general public. With increased consumer spending on luxury items,
the adoption of HVAC and energy management services is expected to
increase.
• Technology: This market is sub-divided based on the type of technology
such as wired, power-line, wireless and computing networks. The wireless
market is further classified into Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, KNX and others.
Wireless technology is expected to continue driving the market in the
future due to low setting-up costs. Among available wireless
technologies, Zigbee, Z-wave and KNX are driving the market.
• Type of service: Based on the types of services, the market is classified
into luxury, do it yourself (DIY), mainstream and managed services. As of
now, the market is dominated by luxury services due to the high expense
of deploying technology. Eventually, this market is expected to grow
through the adoption of mainstream and managed services, due to the
entry of telecom operators.

Opportunities galore

The home automation market offers exciting revenue opportunities for

pure-play consumer electronics companies as well as semiconductor
companies dealing with embedded automation components and kits.

• However, to grow in this market, the industry must create innovative

products that widen the appeal of connected home technology for the
mass market.
Security is one of the critical aspects that needs to be addressed.
Therefore, security solutions vendors need to develop their own high-
tech products for automated home security, opening a wider market for
growth and the adoption of these solutions.
Connectivity is poised to grow to such an extent that every household

18 | P a g e
device and equipment will be connected through a home network. This in
turn will require, on an average, around 25 to 30 connected sensors and
devices linked via a home area network to the Internet as well as the
service provider’s back-end systems.
• Increasing demand for enhanced and round-the-clock connectivity is also
paving the way for Pay TV and ISP Gateway technologies, which are
expected to further propel demand for home automation products in the
medium to long term.
The rapid proliferation of smart mobile devices, coupled with
technological advancements, is also promoting the adoption of home
automation products that are capable of operating at the push of a button.
According to industry experts, products like security cameras, video
doorbells, smart plugs, HVAC controls, lighting controllers, monitoring
for gas leakage, smart home entertainment systems, automated
audio/video systems, as well as garage and other door/window blinds
controls are in demand in the Indian market.
• Besides, companies are bundling offers and offering holistic solutions to
consumers, i.e., adding UPS systems, services-on-demand options, etc.
At the component level, the integration of multiple and diverse sensors
for monitoring and the corresponding actuators for control, will gain
importance in the home automation sector.
• Advanced analytics will be required to capture sensor inputs and to drive
controllers based on these inputs, as per user convenience/preferences.
• Further, well-deployed smart sensors can also reduce energy wastage.
Nowadays, not just homes but an entire gated community can become
smart. Therefore, app based smart services for common areas like
community halls, gyms, etc, are much in demand.
