When in Rome do as the Romans do.

Almost every person has been taught at some point in his or her life how
to behave properly in a society, so that to be regarded as a true gentleman or
lady. Manners are highly important every where in the world, however they are
not the same in all countries. Therefore, a tourist should really be aware of
those differences, in order not to make mistakes and be considered rude.
Indeed, strange at it may seem, what for us, Romanians, is a sign of good
manners, for a British or Italian may be seen as inadequate or even bad
behavior.
That is why, anyone who travels abroad must make sure that his or her
conduct are in tune with the customs of the visited people. For example, the
Japanese salute with a bow and few shake hands, something totally different
from what the Europeans usually do. Even more striking, in Bulgaria, when
people mean “yes” they nod as the Romanians do when they say “no,” and the
other way around. Furthermore, in Yugoslavia it is considered a total rudeness
for a woman to declare her age in public, whether asked or not.
In conclusion, the proverb “when in Rome do as the Romans do” has a lot
of meaning for travelers, and I believe each tourist should pay attention to the
small details, because what for one seems natural, for a person of another
nationality may be intolerable.
