INTRODUCTION TO LINEAR EQUATIONS

 An equation is a statement that two numbers or two expressions are equal.

 An open sentence is a sentence that contains one or more variables. It can be true or false, depending
upon the values that are substituted for the variables in the equation.

This equation is true. This equation is false. This equation is an identity. This equation is neither true nor false.
11 − 5 = 6 12 − 5 = 6 𝑥+1=𝑥+1 𝑥−5=6
 A value of the variable that makes an equation true is called a solution or root of the equation. To solve
an equation means to find all the solutions of the equation.
When do we say an equation is linear? What do you notice in table?
Examples of linear Non-examples of linear
When the highest power of the variable of an
equation equation
equation in one variable is 1, the equation is
3𝑥 + 10 = 34 𝑥2 + 1 = 7
8𝑥 = 64 3
𝑥 − 7𝑥 + 2 = 6 linear, also called a first-degree equation. It is
2(𝑦 − 3) = 5 equivalent to an equation of the form 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 =
0, where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are real numbers and 𝑎 ≠ 0.

Determine if the given values are the solutions to the equation.

EXAMPLE 1. 2𝑦 − 5 = 7 𝑦 = 6, 𝑦 = 2 EXAMPLE 2. 3𝑥 + 2 = 𝑥 − 6 𝑥 = 4, 𝑥 = −4

TRY THIS!
Determine if the given values of 𝑥 are solutions to the equations.
𝑥 𝑥
1. + 4 = 7: 𝑥 = 6, 𝑥 = 12 _________________________________

2. 2(𝑥 − 1) = 𝑥 − 3: 𝑥 = 0, 𝑥 = −1, 𝑥 = 1 _________________________________
3. 4(𝑥 − 1) = 3(𝑥 + 1) − 1: 𝑥 = 4, 𝑥 = 5, 𝑥 = 6 _________________________________
